EV general discussion

You're missing the point. I’m not pretending the original Ioniq shape or size is what everyone wants now. I’m saying the concept is what’s missing: efficient, practical, affordable, reliable, with good real world range. If that ends up as a mini-SUV/crossover because that’s where the market is, fine. I said as much previously.
The body style isn’t the point at all. The point is that the efficiency first, mainstream family EV still hasn’t really been nailed yet, by anyone. MG tried, but screwed the MG4 badly. And if you look at the average family car across the UK, and not just in more affluent areas, I think you’ll find it’s generally somewhere between Focus/Golf and Kona/Qashqai sized, basically hatchback, liftback, saloon, estate, through mini-SUV.
Most families buy something in that mainstream practical zone. They generally aren’t all buying £35-40k+ MPVs or similar, and whilst larger cars have got more popular, they're still not the majority. And that’s just observable reality. Walk through a supermarket car park, school drop-off, retail park, hospital car park, workplace car park etc.

The volume family cars are things like:
Focus / Golf / Astra / Octavia type cars
Qashqai / Tucson / Sportage / Kona / T-Roc / Juke type crossovers
Increasingly things like EV3, Dolphin, Atto, MG4, Enyaq, ID.4, Ioniq 5, Model Y etc

If you want to consider the SUV as all anyone wants these days, then you need to actually take a look at the market.

As of a month ago, these were the most sold vehicles in the UK in 2026 to date:

Top registrations:
1. Ford Puma - 24,358
2. Kia Sportage - 21,274
3. Jaecoo 7 - 20,695
4. Nissan Qashqai - 18,558
5. Vauxhall Corsa - 15,863
6. Volkswagen Golf - 14,658
7. Volvo XC40 - 13,478
8. MG HS - 13,475

Basically the only 2 options if I want to stick with EV

Maybe I missed it and you only want a van/SUV only, but out of everything recommended it seems weird something like an ID.7 Tourer wouldn't come up as a potental option at least! It doesn't have such a high roofline like a PV5/Buzz, but it's equally as long so it's not really lacking for space, and the lower roof/body means much better range of course. £30k is still a bit tight on those, there's one or two available for ~£30k right now, but plenty at £35k, so it won't be too long till they get there I think.

I've read the thread about the issues @MrRockliffe had had with his, and for that reason I'm out. Also the reason why the PV5 is above the Buzz in my shortlist, despite being the looks being far superior (IMO only ofc) (incidentally saw one in Morrisons earlier in the colour I would have - the half white/half midnight blue)

A people mover is a glorified van so no it's not a car who said it's a car

This is what I'm trying to figure out. It won car of the year but apparently it's not a car. Then some folks decided is a car, and others said it's a van. Since then it's also been an MPV, a people carrier, a caravan.

I'm still confused and this is an extremely important discussion that requires resolution.

This is how wars are started.

If money allows, when they're released and available second hand, then surely the Skoda Peaq is gonna be the primary box ticker? It's why it's top of our shortlist!

Absolutely critical. I'm talking to my lawyers already

Auto-Express use this all important sentence at the end.

"delivers comfort and a level of driving ability that has never been seen from a van-derived model before. Combine all of these qualities with competitive prices, and the PV5 is a new take on the family car that redefines the class."

So it is both a van and a car.

That is a lot of things you have to wait for to get one. Are you still gonna need it by the time that happens?

If you close your eyes it can be a car, when open it is a van with windows..
