EV general discussion

Maybe the Alpine A290 would address some of those frustrations, though probably not all of them such as cup holders

We looked at that too, and whilst the cupholders were still a problem, my wife didn't like the spots on the front, and it was too "boy racer".

I can't disagree with her tbh.

There are some left hand drive Cupra Ravel's at dealers now its slightly larger and the small battery version is a similar price

I think Nicole (& family?) would appreciate the smiley face of the twingo - forget yankee cupholders just somewhere to put your baguette
cameo part in the next cars movie hopefully.

Because they are all facilities that are equally usable by all guests. The EV charger will be used buy a small proportion of their guests. An air fryer also isn't hundreds of pounds to install.

Could say the same about many facilities though - why not charge extra to use the TV or the oven, or the shower, or heating, air con, internet etc. not everyone is going to use them. I can't imagine anyone being particularly impressed at turning up to an Airbnb advertised with internet and TV, only to find the owner is charging you 10p/MB to use the wifi and 5p/min to watch TV.

I think you should absolutely complain. You should've been told the cost in advance.

Quite, I'd tell the owner I was going to charge elsewhere on principal and leave them a poor review.

I get there are charger install costs to recoup, but either state the grossly inflated costs up front, or pass on the cost price and add a couple of ££ to the rental price to cover it. If I was choosing between 2 otherwise similar properties and one had a charger, I'd happily pay a few ££ more for the convenience of having a charger, but I'd also expect it to either be included (or at least a certain number of kwh), or pay normal residential rates (e.g. ~30p at most), unless stated otherwise.

At Tesla owners what you do use for a backup key assuming you use your phones the primary key?

From a quick google options seem to be
Risk it with your phone only
Take card with you via wallet or key holder
Buy Teslas expensive NFC key fob
Buy an Apple Watch

As much as I like Apple gear I’m not a huge fan of their watch and prefer garmin offering which don’t seem to have ability to offer the functionality.

Key card in my wallet. Not bothered with adding the key to my Apple watch.

Internet is fixed cost as is a TV licence and watching it isn't drawing a constant 7kW in electricity.

Absolutely the costs should have been stated upfront but I think an expectation that charging is just included in the rental fee is a bit unrealistic. Its a theoretical £20 a day in additional cost straight off your bottom line.

Where do you put your license card then?

I just have a slim card holder with 4 cards and a £10 note
Leave my license at home, why would I carry it with me? Again its just another thing to lose or get stolen.

Edit - I panicked and checked Google to make sure I wasn't missing a legal requirement :p

I agree, and remember the property owner will be paying a fee over the exlectricity price to have someone manage a charging portal and do metering/payment collection for them as well. TBH if the ad says EV charging but doesn't state a price and it was that important to you then I'd be messaging to find out before booking

Router and TV will both be using more electricity while in active use than not, yes it's orders of magnitude less than charging an EV, but that's more an argument of where you draw the line than whether it's reasonable to charge for available facilities without advance warning (and how much to inflate the price so as to profit from doing so).

Perhaps the TV and internet were poor examples, but maybe you want to tumble dry 20 loads of clothes, have a 2 hour shower twice a day, and cook multiple roast dinners

This

Perhaps, but then the expectation would be that if it wasn't included it would be stated up front, therefore it is included.

Maybe it's an unrealistic expectation, but the owner would still be getting a poor review for giving that expectation (such an uplift suggests there's a non-zero chance that it is being done completely intentionally in order to boost their profit)

If I go to a hotel and the description says EV charging I’m under no illusions that it’s free. None of the hotel websites state the price per kWh either (and often the hotel outsources this to third parties). I think people have unrealistic expectations about what should be described on Airbnb tbh

I learned a long time ago to check claims of 'what's included' in more detail if it bothers me - hotels, AirBnB, whatever, they can all be as bad as each other with this stuff - a favourite of (mostly cheap) hotels is saying they have parking, which turns out to be an adjacent Pay and Display shared with a row of shops that you'll be lucky to find a space in unless you arrive 2 minutes after check in opens. It's something I always try to check separately before booking somewhere - if it's not obvious they have their own dedicated car park then i'll look elsewhere if possible.

A hotel with tens/hundreds of other guests is a bit different to a rental cottage, and the charging is usually provided by one of the big charging networks and is listed on public charging sites, so freely available information. Very different to a Zappi bolted to the front of a house exclusively for use by that property.

I also wouldn't expect a hotel to have a fully equipped kitchen etc. in the room either, but if an Airbnb had one listed, I'd expect to be able to use it without an additional charge.

As I said, I would put this down to the owner deliberately obfuscating the information in order to increase their profit, and review accordingly
