EV general discussion

Thank you, i was wondering if it's worth spending the extra £200-300 to jump from the Octopus brand to Ohme or the slightly more expensive Hypervolt Home 3 Pro.

I have said this before on here, for the love of god do not get a OHME, get the far superior Hypervolt instead!!

On a side note, anybody on here on EDF's EV tariff with a OHME charger, using the OHME app are you able to select the correct tariff in the OHME app and get the full 7 hours off peak rate? For some reason I am only getting five hours and hardly ever at full power. For example I need a full charge tonight from 25% to 100% and the app claims it cannot be achieved and dropped it down to 97% which probably won't make a difference to my needs but that's not the point because one day it will as I am going to be dropping below 25% four days a week for the next six weeks. Tonights schedule is charging from 00.02-04.52 and it's always the same. I have tried manually entering my tariff details by selecting "my tariff is not listed" in the app and entering the correct times and prices but it refuses to save and defaults back to "EDF Go Electric" which OHME seems to think starts at 00.01 until 04.59 instead of 23.00 until 06.00. See, ******* OHME POS yet again!! Avoid them like the plague!!

I got my car today and I’m on EDF and the smart charging control on the app seems a bit crap. I can’t set 11-6, only smart charging control that looks for less grid demand which could still be in peak tariff. Why not just add a time schedule? I could well be missing something as a noob but I’ve had to just set a schedule on the zappi app instead but it doesn’t allow me to set 80% charging for example.

The point of smart charging schedules like this is that it charges whenever it suits them to charge it and you'll pay the cheaper rate regardless of when that is - you don't set any schedules or anything like that, just how much charge you need and when you need it by.

The 'peak' times typically only refer to household usage, not your car charging.

If you prefer scheduling your own charging solely overnight instead, then don't join a smart charging tariff, join a time of use tariff.

Do you not have this in your app?

Yeah I did try that app but I didn't realise that it gave you the charge at the 6p rate if it kicked in outside of the 11-6 window. What though is with % top up rather than just saying I want my car at 80%?

Depends how you integrate and whether it actually has any visibility of your cars state of charge.

or, save £800 and get the salus instead and install a wifi repeater if needed V
you need several years of slightly cheaper IOG kwh's to make up the difference, has 5 years warranty.
The charger market cartel needed some competition.

Can also invest the money and use it to install a bidirectional charger in a couple of years when they are onstream

Moderator’s score: 2/10. Inconsistent capitalisation, missing punctuation, random cartel related hyperlink and sentences that appear to end wherever convenient. The stray “V” is particularly baffling, cut and paste gone wrong? The advice may be useful, but the presentation remains an obstacle to understanding it. Proofreading before posting really shouldn't be this difficult.

I'm pretty sure he's just an ancient outdated code script that's running on an old 386 in a long abandoned basement somewhere still barely clinging on to life.

No sane person would ever write that down without thinking what a special person he must look.

Yet despite having every single person who engages with him tell him he comes across as a pot plant with a broken keyboard, he still thinks he's somehow contributing something worthwhile.

Bloke's lost.

I think he does this to point you to the next bit of text, which is good because nobody would ever think to look a few millimetres down for the next part of his riveting tale.

This made my day

Ok so after a bit more reading and looking at the 3 apps!

Zappi app I can set my schedule 11-6am but I still need to use the hyundai app to set to 80% charge or it just runs until it's 100%

or

I can try this EDF smart charging to add a percentage of charge which i'd have to change daily or just set it to 100% and again use the hyundai app to limit to 80%

or

Just use the Hyundai app to set a schedule and set charge limit. This seems so much simpler but reading online almost no one recommends it. Is there a reason why that I'm missing?

How are older people supposed to do all this. My mum can barely use her phone to call people never mind apps. Why is it so complicated to just charge your car, specific apps, specific times, specific tariffs.

Immature tech. As tech matured hopefully they will start to standardise.
Don't forget the days of ISA, serial, parallel, usb, FireWire, p/s2, usb etc etc.
Thankfully we have standardised on ccs2 for the physical connection, now just needs the software implementation to catch up...

Very good point, I think my mum still struggles with most things electronic, although things have improved, 30 years ago the thought of telling her to go online and do anything would have been hilarious!

It's very definitely bleeding edge, not leading edge.

It’s not, it’s just a route to massively reduce your costs if you opt to go on a dynamic tarriff.

Otherwise just plug in.

It's as complicated as you want to make it imo - smart charging adds a level of complexity in order to access marginally cheaper charging costs but it's by no means mandatory to use smart charging tariffs.

If you value simplicity, get a time of use tariff, set up a schedule to charge between those times (and a charge limit if you want to cap at 80%) and it's pretty much set and forget. But you might have to pay 1 or 2p per kWh more than you can access via smart charging.

It doesn't need to be complicated, but it's nice to have lots of features to cater for all users.

Using your mum as an example (mine would be exactly the same) set the car to 80% max charge which is a one off setting and set the charger to charge on plug in. Plug the car in, it charges to 80% and stops.

Hyundai is a pain because they locked down their API so you can't go with the nice simple option of setting the charge you want to hit in the EDF app and just letting it do it's thing because it can't connect direct to the car.

Saying that we run a Hyundai and a VW with different battery sizes so we've got the fun of accounting for that as well and it's no great hassle even though we generally need to plug at least one of them in every day.

My VW has the 80% limit set in the car, my wife's Kona charges until it's full because woman "reasons" but it's also on PCP so I'm not particularly fussed about babying the battery unlike the VW which I own but again easy enough to set and forget the limit in the Hyundai app and just let it do it's thing.

Plug it in, open the app set what you need and forget.

It's as difficult as you make it in a lot of cases.

My Ohme settings are literally plug in, and then it charges at the off peak time, then stops. It couldn't really be more simple if you tried.
