Nirvana - Nevermind -Surprised reading through the thread no one had this one (Although I probably missed it), personally I think Bleach was a far better album.

Yeah, but you also rubbished someone else's. You even used the word rubbish. For the first time ever in my 890 posts, have a rolleyes  !

thats what I'm getting at DMpoole has going by his posts inhere a huge stockpile of records / tracks by bads i havent even heard about never mind can comment on so if someone is going to give opinons on rock bands etc it should be him as he probably is in the know about most of them

however in this thread all I saw was him jumping on other peoples opinons rubbishing them and then giving his own.

what I was getting at was, why doesnt he list a few of his fav bands and there defining moments for us all to see ? rahter than criticising other peoples opinons.

The Manics really had "defining" albums. Firstly, The Holy Bible was really a culmination of what they stood for as a band in their early years and is one of the darkest, most honest and frankly disturbing albums I have heard. Everything must go defined the new "post-richie" manics. A lighter, brighter band without the weight of the world on their shoulders. It's impossible to say one is more "defining" than the other IMO as they define two completely different bands in two different eras (albeit only a couple of years apart).

I don't really agreem seeing as Ritchie wrote a fair bit of EMG.

Not nearly as much as on THB. Lyrically and musically it is as different from THB as night and day.

Two off the top of my head that I haven't seen mentioned:

Stereophonics - Performance And Cocktails
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

As for The Prodigy, MFTJG was definately their defining moment, it showed that they were here to stay with thier own uniquely Prodigy sound when the whole 'Rave' scene that they were previously associated with was starting to die away.

To try and pull things back slightly more on-topic....

The Verve - Urban Hymns (defining moment) & last album a odd combination)
Megadeath - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? (defining moment)
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (defining moment odd for been a live album)
Mötley Crüe - Girls, Girls, Girls (defining moment sleazy rock at it's best)
The Cult - Electric (defining moment)

And two for someone else to have a stab at as I really can't make my mind up

Public Enemy (fear of a black planet? it takes a nation of millions?)
Run DMC - (rasing hell? tougher than leather?)

I would say you need to swap BITUSA and BTR around there...BITUSA was Springsteen's real catapult into the big time, BTR was more his defining moment and one which kept him signed on with the record company. Sure it brought him a big following, but BITUSA brought wayyyyy more fans in then BTR due to its more commerical/poppy/mainstream appeal of the songs.

Well I hadn't got an option for EBT = Even Bigger time :D
A lot of artists had a BT moment and quite a few had an EBT moment.

Still curious to see if people think there is one. I'm struggling to single any out.

Ok I'll play, Big Time isn't really an option here unless you want to count when the Jackson 5 first introduced him to the world but that isn't as an individual artist so it be default becomes about the Defining moment albulm.

It doesn't show much imagination but I'd say Thriller is the most quintessentially Jackson albulm, it has arguably the best songs when he was at the peak of his fame and ability(read as before he descended to being a total fruitloop). It contains one of the most famous music videos ever in Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean's video aren't bad either. From the original release 5 out of the 9 tracks are stone cold classics which is not bad going by any stretch of the imagination. You can probably also make a case for Off The Wall based on a couple of the songs and the fact that it is his first proper albulm on the Epic label when he was an 'adult' artist but I don't think it is quite as solid as Thriller is/was.

The Sisters of Mercy - First and last and always
The Cure - Disintegration
The Cult - Love
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
Joy Division - Closer
Simple Minds - New Gold Dream or Sparkle in the rain
U2 - The Joshua Tree
Jean Michell Jarre - Oxygene 1 - 6
NIN - Pretty Hate Machine
Metallica - The Black Album
Van Halen - Van Halen 1
Duran Duran - Duran Duran
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Prince - Lovesexy or Sign o the times

some oldies i know, but goldies
