Evo Triangle: Your fun is up.

Your "brand new" (I love this lol) Mercedes is legally required to under report your speed. Newer regulations want it to under report more.

All speedometers are miles out in the UK and feel free to get a GPS device and check.

So don't go blaming others because you don't know how the law or your car works.

Erm...over report, surely?
If it was under reporting, it would be showing less than your actual speed, which is categorically not allowed.

Mine over-reads by about 2mph.

True that, either over estimate or under report, I had the phrases in my head and mashed them :p

Ah yes, as I suspected, you’re one of ‘them’.

I want to apologize, I had a guy at work who would constantly worked to get in that he had his "new Mercedes" into every conversation he could. Your comment gave me flash backs but there is no reason to project that attitude onto you, that's unfair.

However I would say it's worth checking out what your real speed is so you can be sure.

No car I've owned has had more than a 2 or 3mph discrepancy at 70mph. 'miles out' just doesn't happen in most cars.

I've seen 5-6mph at 70mph fairly often in a range of cars. It varies by brand and car to car so it's always good to check what your real speed is. The GPS devices i've used tend to agree with each other (Garmin sat nav, Blackview GPS and phone GPS)

It's rare to see someone apologise on here :) I think my speedo is about 4 mph out, assuming the phone is accurate.

No need to apologise, but credit to you for doing so. Many could learn from that.

Good.

Want to push your car past established speed limits, take it to a track.

At 197 mph indicated Waze said 193mph. Pretty good I thought and also evidenced lollipop ladies don’t interfere with your GPS even when waving their fists.

Another good fun road ruined - like the cat & fiddle - but, tbh, done for reasons of safety and life preservation rather than being killjoys or for revenue generation.

Probably a good move given it’s history.
My mum lives on the evo triangle and has witnessed many accidents on there. The lad who killed the two in the mercedes, this happened right by my mums house. We've also lost a lot of our pets to people speeding up here. I drive for a living and i don't exactly like driving slow myself all the time but people who use this stretch more often than not drive excessively over the speed limit and are not sensible with their driving at all. If you lived on these roads, had young family visiting your home, had witness people dying at the fault of idiot drivers then I'm pretty sure you'd want to do something about it yourself to. The speed cameras have worked and I'm happy they have, and anyone speeding between them on the stretch we live on, we have security cameras fitted and will pass details onto the police. You don't have to do 90+ to enjoy a road. A road can be enjoyed at a sensilble speed. If you want to floor it then do what a few people have suggested and stick to the tracks you pay to speed on, not the roads were you impact on other peoples lives just because you want to put your foot down

Blimey this thread is a blast from the past (2018?). I've not been on this route myself in around 3 years anyone? Has it wrecked it? it was a nice piece of road but there's that man in Wales it not something I preferably go to...

Public roads aren't the place to have fun. Book a track day if you want to have fun, plenty of tracks around not even that expensive.

You can have plenty of fun on public roads without being irresponsible, dangerous, or even breaking the speed limit. So I wouldn't say they aren't the place to have fun, you just have to rein it in a little. If people could only have fun on tracks, there would be no fun cars bought or sold.

The way some people were driving on the evo was waaaaaaay over the mark, some of the videos out there are pure insanity...

There is a route near me which a magazine uses to road test cars (cant remember which). That has been ruined by the safety wombles now. They went along parts of it, lowered the speed limits and then put cameras up :\

Doesnt stop the bikers though, they dont have front plates so still go warp speed through them.

Thing is there are too many fast cars in the hands of terrible drivers with little or no experience trying to learn their cars on roads full of others. We have all been there of course, in my day it was less of problem as most the cars were horse drawn, the posh ones steam powered and the roads were far less cluttered. Day 1 of passing my test I took my Mini 1000 to is maximum speed on the A38 near Lichfield, somewhere around the massive heights of 85mph indicated (so probably around 30mph real world) and then nearly missed my braking as I came into an island due to an incredible lack of talent. None of us are immune but today all cars seem to have 110mph + top speeds so getting into danger far more quickly on MUCH busier roads is easy.

The Evo Triangle can be enjoyed at legal speeds in some cars but 70mph-90mph is the sweet spot for the best bits I think, so I am told.... I can understand how that would be a problem for those living around there and I say that as a petrolhead. Having said that there is enjoyment to be had on the right roads, with good visibility and few if any other cars on them. The North Cost 500 will be next to suffer I fear, though that has become a bit more lucrative so it might cause a stink if they camera it.

I am sorry to say having a fast car on UK roads is becoming less and less appealing these days. As someone who started driving in the 'olden days' I have seen a massive change in road conditions. When it snowed we used to go to a local car park at the back of a Safeway and skid our cars around. When it was closed and everyone had gone of course. The Police used to come watch and allow it to go on if we kept sensible. This isn't apocryphal, but can you imagine that happening today? I was pulled many times and let off in the past, even carrying 110mph on the M5 (for I believed and so did the Police officer at the time good reason) back in the 90's. Ask a normal bobby and many have been nicked by a camera, some often and most have disdain for them. But that is modern motoring and it will only get worse.

Road trips with friends are where I take most pleasure from driving these days. Long distances, often into Europe (ideally with some Autobahns) and then a track at the end. The driving is important and great fun, but not the be all and end all of the trip. Often the track stuff takes second place to the beers in the evening and laughs. Sorry boys and girls, you are pretty much ****** moving forward. The king is dead and not going to longer live!

Something I have mixed feelings about - there are stretches of road where giving it a quick blast above the speed limit is extremely unlikely to be a safety issue but I don't have much time for people who exceed the speed limit by any significant amount or otherwise drive dangerously in built up areas. Fortunately the stretch of dual carriageway near me where people tend to have a bit of fun the police are fairly tolerant as long as people aren't driving without due care but you still get the odd person who'll do 150+ :(

The problem is the people whining about road safety are much louder than the people who represent drivers. That's why we keep seeing completely out of place 30-40 limits on open, quiet rural roads :/

It's often those groups of old gits who sit at the side of the road with a speed gun for months on end, then send the stats off to the council or police. Once they get what they want on one stratch they move on to the next.

It's not difficult to understand why though - anyone who sticks their hand up to 'represent drivers' immediately becomes the face of not only those people who will relatively responsibly enjoy a bit of a spirited drive on some quiet roads on a Sunday morning but also the legions of knobs who spend their lives bombing around built up city centres at 60mph, 'drifting' round car parks at 1am, racing each other on ring roads, etc. etc.

I wouldn't want be anywhere near 'representing drivers' when you see what the 'enthusiast' community looks like on social media.
