F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

I follow this thread closely due to my interest in F1, but hardly ever post in it.

It does amuse me however that several people here give the impression that they think they know better than massive, global engineering and race firms. Makes me wonder why (apart from a couple who genuinely are) we aren't all employed by F1 teams.

Joys of the internet :p

Ditto.

It isn't unbelievable that a driver would lift off on the straights to hide the true pace of the car, even though I don't think thats the case.

Care to mention them? I'm itching to break down each reason you give. ;)

Also you'd have to be quite stupid to think McLaren put the 08 rear wing on the car for no point and that it was a waste of time and money, there is obviously a point for everything a team does in testing.

Indeed. That is why I stated that you wouldnt do that if you had access to legal car parts - in McLaren's case, they didnt. The debate was about BrawnGP running an illegal car, even though they didnt need to.

It's the British way'm afraid.

If there is a car crash then everybody becomes detcective, also take football, every fan becomes god/referee and the worlds best coach all in a few seconds of a right or wrong decision...;)

Why should F1/Motorsport be any different?

Tritto! If that's a word

Quitto

(lol sorry)

Someone above mentioned about the testing ban mid-season.

I for one also lament the loss as sooo many teams test(ed) in Jerez, i've been up twice this year and various times in the past, at 5 Euros a day...it was brillaint :(

Shame for me anyways.

I for one will not agree with you.

The whole point of having threads like this and the many hundreds of threads related to football, is fans of the sport can argue and debate various things (especially during the off-season, when things are quiet). If we all decided that we didnt know any better, had no opinions and that 'the powers that be' knew best, then we might as well close down these types of threads and just wait for the races to start/end.

The next time I see the people who agreed with your post ...

...post up an opinion about F1, I shall point out to them that they keep quiet and let the powers that be decide whats best for F1 related matters. :p

OK, have fun doing that :)

I'll give you a starter for free - I think F1 is a great sport.

That was an opinion about F1 wasn't it? Now can I have my comment telling me to be quiet please.

Sure.

Have one for free.

Please refrain from making comments. Its best left to the powers that be, to tell us whether or not we are liking F1 or not.

:p

exactly, and its one of the reasons id guess that they threw in the towl. Engine makers, unable to tweak engines.... So why even bother show up?

Renault were able to obtain permission to tune* their engine up from FOTA.

*although rumour is they went beyond the power 'matching' they should have and the car went from midfield to insta-quick over night.

Falls into line
But the powers (F1 management wise) that be are relatively inflexible when it comes to deciding what's best for F1...the past 20 years of following F1 have taught me that.

Anyways, put my reply in context, I agree with the what I think the original poster was saying, i.e. opinions for opinions sake without much of a clue as to what's going on. Im no expert by any stretch, but some of the comments make me laugh/die inside a little. Doesn't mean I'd want to see them stop posting though.

Well, its nice to finally see McLaren openly admit that there is a major problem and that they aren't off the pace "because Heikki was lifting on the straights". (Anybody who knows anything about F1 knows that no driver would do that if they were so far off the pace, as it makes them look incompetent, slow and only serves to boost morale of your rivals).

Well, it was the track site reporters at the test which were saying that, I guess we will never know really.

It is illogical for Macca to sandbag at this stage, and to be fair they aren't a ridiculous amount behind, and have been (unsteadily) reducing the gap between them and everyone else*

Martin Whitmarsh and Norbert Haug have both confirmed they aren't up to pace either.

I seriously think they've got a lot of work to do at Jerez next week, rear-aero and chassis wise. Will be interesting to see their times, both in comparison with their earlier Jerez tests, and taking into account Ferrari wont be there.

*Im not 100% convinced on BrawnGP, although I want to be

You missed the point of his post.

We have no problem with people posting opinions on the sport, we all have one afterall!

The issue is how certain members here imply that they know better than everyone else, including people who are actively involved in the sport. The second point which was hinted at, was how these threads develop into fickle little arguments at each other. The point is people believe their own opinion to be fact, or at least it is portrayed that way. I think this is one of the reasons at least rpstewart has refrained from making the F1 threads this year, which imo is a shame but can understand why he has.

I thought he just got fed up of people expecting the threads to be created... people used to post stuff like "ffs when is the new F1 thread going to be made!?"
