F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Makes the 2008 car look a right mess. Im a fan of the new clean looks.

Also looks like Ferrari have significantly reduced there wheelbase. They did, IIRC, have the longest wheelbase of any team. Cant use that as an excuse at Monaco anymore then.

Looks a lot nicer and cleaner than the F2008

lets hope racing is a lot closer this year and more overtaking on track

I'm not sure they have reduced their wheelbase that much. I did one image based on lengths of the car in the image and another based on wheelbase - I suspect the one based on wheelbase is closer to reality.

May do another one based on cockpit entry size - that is regulated...

they dont. but it allows them to bend the rules with those turning vanes......oops sorry mirror supports.

Once again - if a rule is written in a vague way, then designers have a clear duty to bend that rule.

Case in point - in 1981, a minimum ride was introduced to reduce the downforce granted by the ground effects designs in use by most teams at the time. Gordon Murray designed the latest iteration of the Brabham car with a hydropneumatic suspension setup that gave the car a legal ride height when measured (static in the pitlane) but dropped the car right down onto the track when racing to give it all the downforce. Completely within the rules, as they were written - the rulemakers never specified how much it could deflect by when downforce was applied, they just specified a static ride height.

Just wait for the rest of the cars to be unveiled, I'm sure we'll see some other bits of trickery that the rules couldn't quash :)

This is where the fun lies. If people didnt take their own interpretations of the rules, every car would be the same.

Cant wait to see what else arrives :)

i cant see what they have done will make for more overtaking

Please explain, so we can then compaire your opinion with the Overtaking Working Group formed of many team leaders, engineering expers, aerodynamic professionals and race drivers who were responcible for the development of the new regulations...

they have been trying for years to get better overtaking and the only thing that worked was pitstops:D
so i cant see the new regs helping much if at all
its not like they tested the 2 cars and found that the 2009 regs give better overtaking, there just saying they hope the new regs will, they dont know for sure

I think its pretty obvious from the changes made that the cars will be able to follow each other without losing as much downforce.

This should promote closer racing, and more drafting/overtaking :)

Its theoretical with these particular cars, but the science is sound :D Also, correct me if i am wrong, but this is one of the most dramatic regulatons change for a long time?

there`s that word "should"
i hope the new regs do work, because f1 needs something to happen, but i go on past reg changes that they hoped would make better racing and didnt
what ever the regs are the teams arent going to make it easy for another teams car following them to get past

This years aero restrictions make it difficult for teams to do anything about it, thats the point. Less Aero grip and improved mechanical grip WILL make racing closer through corners if nothing else.

As far as the overall look of the cars goes, probably one of the bigger changes since '98 and the introduction of grooved tyres and a narrower width. Obviously cars have gotten less and less 'clean' ever since the introduction of barge boards back in '93 (I think?) - more and more flip-ups and winglets until suddenly every single car is polluted with the damned things. But as far as changes go where you can put a car next to one from the previous season and tell which is the newer.....yeah, this is a pretty big change.
