F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

just incase? It should be 2nd nature to check mirrors before moving.....

oh and Intermediates are used on shakedown tests because it doesn't count as testing mileage (apparently).

How does that rule work if it rains?

Then again, F1 drivers appear to be scared of the rain. No wonder they struggle when its a wet race, they never seem keen to test in the rain.

There's not much to test in the rain, the setup remains largely the same besides different tyres. They are still battling the same tyre heat issue they would in the dry, not much they can do about that whether its wet or dry. The cut tyres help stop the aquaplaning to restore lateral grip, and that's about all they could do. Aero changes are unlikely when rain usually happens mid race anyway.

It's more cost effective to test in the dry, rain if anything can be simulated well enough.

im not so sure why you think KERS is going to be a magical boost (pardon the pun) to there laptimes.

IF the better setup non-KERS cars have better corner speed they will be far enough up the road to make the boost worthless to the heavy trucks with KERS.

There will be a point when KERS becomes the best option. But i don't believe its going to be in the first few races. Plus its going to be suited to some tracks more than others.

Of course its all speculation at the moment... :)

Cars still have to weigh 605KG KERS or not so your example holds little water.

You can still balance the car aslong as the whole package does not exceed 605KG.

thing is KERS is putting weight aft, which over the last few seasons has been a bad thing, with teams trying to get as much weight over the nose as possible.

Obviously with slicks instead of groves, and a change in COP/aero balance might throw that idea totally out the window. Who knows.

In seasons gone by, there were many situations (specifically involving Trulli), where he was as much as 2-3s/lap slower than cars behind him, yet he would successfully keep them behind him.

First off, ballast will be added, so the weight saving (without KERS) wont exist. The weight loading (front to back), could gain you an advantage, but I believe that KERS would be a bigger advantage as it will help you defend from cars (that are slower in the corners but faster in the straights), when you hit the straights. Also, KERS will help you overtake the likes of Trulli, who will be slow in the corners but decent on the straights. Without KERS, you can quite easily be following a much slower car until the pitstops (just as we have seen happen over the last few years).

Of course, the new regs will apparently make it easier to follow the car in front more closely, but the jury is still out on that one. I'll believe it when I see it.

Like you said though, at this point, its all speculation and theory.

McLaren MP4-24 is out.

It's not exactly a minger... *if you ignore the rear wing*

Thing to notice about it, the sidepod openings for the radiator. Last year we saw McLaren almost close one of the sidepods to improve aero at the cooler races, as unlike the Ferrari engine, it's not difficult to cool.

Take the size they closed to sidepod to on those races, and mirror it over to the other side. That'll give you some idea.
