Dennis to quit as McLaren F1 boss

Ron Dennis is to step down as team principal of McLaren and hand over to current number two Martin Whitmarsh ahead of the new Formula One season.

Dennis, who has run McLaren since 1981, will stay on as chief executive of the McLaren Group of companies.

Whitmarsh will take over the running of McLaren's F1 operation on 1 March.

More to follow.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis will step down from his role of team principal before the start of the 2009 season, the Briton announced on Friday.

The 61-year-old, however, made it clear that he is not retiring, but will instead focus on other commitments related to the McLaren Group.

Dennis said he would still attend some races, but intends to pass on his team principal responsibilities to Martin Whitmarsh as of March 1 this year.

"First thing I am going to do is work harder, that is the first target," said Dennis during the launch of the new McLaren.

"I intend to raise my own game because I think everybody in our organisation at every level realises this is a tough period in which we are going to work and of course we are a very diverse organisation now.

"We have a clear intention for our production car programme which is really a challenge. Any product we bring to the market will certainly fall the other side of this financial period.

"I stress nothing to get too excited about but it is absolute time for Martin to take over as team principal. As from March 1 he will adopt that responsibility. I will still go to races, not all of them, because I am passionate.

"I intend to work harder and will take on greater responsibility in the group. I will be full executive chairman. It is time and I have to say it is absolutely 100 percent my decision. It is what I want to do, but I do intend to work much harder.

"Don't see it as some sort of retirement, I want to work harder in other areas and having to plan those tasks around the GP calendar is disruptive to the process. It is a job that Martin will embrace and enjoy.

"It is a job over the years we have shared anyway, but it will be his decision to influence things at a grand prix circuit."

I was wondering what would happen to McLaren Cars once they've finished with the abomination that's the Stirling Moss SLR.

Least offensive plough so far. Is that aero under the intake and sidepods allowed though?

Yes, same as with the Ferrari wing mirror, barge board things. There is a vertical plane drawn roughly where last years sidepods started and nothing is allowed infront of that. However behind it you can still be creative, Ferrari have moved the start of the sidepods back allowing some aero to be added, McLaren have waisted theirs in.

If that was the case there would still be all the aero gumph along the side of the pods, which clearly there isnt.

From what I read there was no aerodynamic appendages allowed between the front and rear axels. But clearly with these things on all 3 cars that have been uncovered, theres got to be some sort of ambiguity around the side pod area.

The McLaren 2009 car looks fantastic, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating (ie. how fast it goes).

I can't wait for testing to begin so we can see just how all the cars compare to one another.

God I hope they keep it 3 races, and not 8 engines. Surely if that means you had very bad luck and had 8 engine failures for the first 8 races, you would start no higher than 11th for the remaining 10 races, as even if you used the same engine for all 10, it would be your 9th of the season?

Without having to dig through the regulations, can anyone remember what the rules are around testing? doesnt the engine rule only apply for Qualifying and race? Or does it not count for Fridays (they can use other engines, as long as they swap back?). To have any track action at all on a Friday they need to be able to bolt on a testing engine, and then put the race one on for Saturday qualifying.

Im going to say that my opinion of the shark fin is that it helps aero, therefore shouldnt be allowed where it is.

Clearly the rules are grey enough for it to be there though.

Thing is though, it doesn't increase turbulence which is what the OWG were trying to reduce more than anything else (which is a side effect of switching from aero to mechanical grip).
