F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

With Willaims doing it with all their British drivers, I still have my faith in Jenson and I would prefer him to go all the way as opposed to Hamilton because I love his true British personality and delicate driving style. Hamilton is great, no doubt about it, but I hate things centered with hype.

I think its just that most Brits love to support the underdog. Its a shame because mediocrity shouldnt be rewarded, while success should.

Hamilton is the epitome of someone who has enormous competitive spirit and wants to win (and be fastest, all the time) at all costs, while Button just doesnt have this mentality and seems very relaxed about losing.

To my mind, Senna was the most competitive of all drivers I've seen over the years.

The Red Bull is indeed fast (to my surprise), though in the hands of Vettel, we knew this would be the case. The question is, how will he compare with the McLaren when Hamilton is at the wheel?

So much for him just being in it for the massive amount of money, huh? ;)

Well he is still earning a lot of money, compared with what he'd have been earning had he left F1. Furthermore, by getting himself another year with Honda, he still might be able to secure a drive for 2010 - potentially more money and a better contract.

If he is getting paid £3M now, then I think its fair value.

Come on, you didn't think Renault would miss a trick when boosting the power of their engine, did you? I'm of the belief that it's now got a bit more oomph than the others on the track - which makes the lack of pace on their own car even more hilarious/worrying (delete as appropriate). Let's remember though, that a great driver in a rubbish car can make for some memorable performances so seeing Alonso try and wrestle it round tracks to get podiums should make for some cracking racing.

Also, hopefully the McLaren isn't that far off the pace and it was just down to testing 2010 compounds and PDLR at the wheel rather than Hamilton.

edit: also regarding the "shark fins" apparently body work in the head restraint area isn't limited - nice loophole found by williams there!

According to F1 Racing this month, the new Renault engine gives 30bhp more power, although it doesn't say how close this is now to the others.

I guess it'll be a similar figure to others. The interesting thing is how Alonso did so well during the 2nd half of the season with a underpowered engine. He was seriously on form and the rest of the car must have been spot on. Given the relative boost in the engine department Renault have this year compared to others - I think Alonso has a good chance of taking the championship. If I were to bet, it would be on Alonso.

Today's odd on the 2009 championship:

Hamilton 2/1
Raikkonen 7/2
Massa 9/2
Alonso 5/1
Kubica 6/1
Heidfeld 16/1
Kovalainen 18/1

It's pretty bad that Kovalainen is thought to be 36 times less likely to win than Hamilton!

maths arent your strong point are they ?

Hamilton is 2 to 1. or a probability of 0.5 where 1 is certain
Kovalainen is 18 to 1. or a probability of 0.055 where 1 is certain

Thus hamilton is 9 times more likely to win, as 0.5 divided by 0.055 is 9.09

I cant find anywhere doing each way bets on team this year. Last year SkyBet did it, and at 33/1 Red Bull have go to be worth a punt for a top 3 finish at 1/5th odds....

You're surprised that a car designed by Adrian Newey after a major rule upheaval is fast?

Yep.

Newey hasnt produced a cracker of a car for many years now. He seems to lost his edge.

What somebody stated on this board, was that he apparently spends more time on extra-curicular activities rather than spend time working on making the fastest car possible. This car may actually be a return to form for him.

I still want to see what the Renault and McLaren are capable of in the hands of their respective lead drivers. Renault havent been fast so far, but I feel that the team will close the gap to the other leading teams. Renault (as long as they have Alonso), have a great track record.
