Not sure if it was mentioned but the reason why Seb (not sure about Mark but should be the same?) was so quick on the first lap was due to them heating the tyres ...
I think Vettel himself had A LOT to do with the speed of his own car.
If a senior McLaren employee is openly admitting that he can see no other reason why Vettel was faster than his own car (which he believes was the fastest car on the grid as the season came to an end), then it is fair to say that the speed of Vettel's car was down to Vettel and not some technical wizardry, which McLaren can't work out.
What people have to remember is that teams study eachother's vehicles down to minute detail and in the case of RBR, you can bet that virtually all teams on the grid have studied it and if it really as simple as saying, "the reason why Vettel is so damn fast is due to X", then you can bet all the teams will have already managed to incorporate the X (factor), into their cars.
The fact remains that Vettel was prodigiously quick, whenever he needed to be and basically humiliated his team-mate, who only 12 months earlier was running neck and neck with him.
In 2011, Vettel was as fast as Hamilton and as reliable as Button...that makes him a potent driver and would explain why he scored so many points. I really would love to see how Alonso would deal with him, if he had a car capable of beating the RBR.
Vettel definitely upped his game last year...no question about it and if he can start to show some overtaking prowess, it would be a brave man who would say that Vettel isn't the best driver in F1 (especially if he becomes a triple WDC in 11 months time).
