F1 2012 - This whole 'stepped-nose' thing

That's in season, this is testing

And how long do you think it takes to build and crash test. No one is going to bring a new tub, it would have needed to be crash tested and it hasn't. Virgin was also asked for change in testing due to lead time and still raced first few races with old tub.

Yes they totally can it's like a pantomine, when is the FIA cut off date for the tub to be homologated? certainly not in testing that's for sure.

I'm not sure, but they don't have time. Even if it was built it hasn't been crash tested. There just isn't enough time. No one will bring new tubs.

No one needs to bring new tubs, but they still have time if they wanted, 1st race is over a month away. Crash test takes half a day if that

here you go, seeing as i cant find the actual document
http://www.planetf1.com/driver/3213/7435907/-Ferrari-chassis-passes-FIA-tests-
Ferrari's 2012 chassis, the 663, has reportedly passed its FIA crash tests on the second attempt.

This season sees the introduction of a new rule which states that all chassis must pass the mandatory FIA crash tests before they can take part in pre-season testing.

I assume the full rules are in
FIA Test Procedure 01/00 but i cant find the document anywhere. a tub takes weeks to build.

there's just no time to build a tub and pass the tests.

and to take it further, you have to set homologation which has already happened, so that's that, there's no tweaking those parts.

Caterham F1 Team have announced, via the team’s chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne, that next year’s car has successfully passed the FIA crash tests. The CT-01 has yet to be given an official launch date, but getting the all clear from these preliminaries will allow the team to tick another box and make advances heading into the new year.

It has been a busy week for the Hingham based squad following on from their official name change from Team Lotus to Caterham F1 Team on Tuesday. Gascoyne expressed his joy on Twitter. “Great week,” he said. “Renaming as Caterham F1 Team on Tuesday and today our first chassis, CT-01 passes all FIA homologation tests. Well done all.”

As Caterham have yet to announce when they will launch the CT-01, we also have no clear indication whether they will be taking part in the first pre-season test in Jerez which begins on Tuesday 7th February.

The team have opted to keep the same driver line-up as it was in their Team Lotus era, allowing the team to have stability heading into a crucial Winter.

The 2012 crash tests are more stringent and must be passed before the car can do the pre-season test in February. This was not the case in previous years and may lead one or two teams to start the testing season with a modified 2011 chassis.

They can change chassis/tubs at any point it just needs to get through a new crash test.

source- mclaren.

The ones they really fear are those built into the chassis, like McLaren’s F Duct scoop last year, because chassis have to be homologated and you cannot make changes after that. So you have to go about copying it in a different, less effective way.

glacius, while you have successfully shown that it would be a massive pain in the rear to change tubs now and that no team needs to change tubs anyway, you have yet to convince me that it would be impossible to change tubs mid season.

from what you have said it would be possible for a team to run with tub1 that has passed all the crash tests but be developing tub2. they could then send tub2 off for crash tests and then start using it mid season (or mid way through testing if it gets done quickly enough) once it has passed all tests and is ready to go

highly impractical, but so far i dont see a rule saying that they are locked to one tub design for a season

read edited post. all the proof you need. they have to pass crash test to run at pre season testing and as such must pass homologation(the fixing of certain parts, including tub)

But there is nothing to stop say Ferrari having a low nose tub crash tested and free to use

Yes there is for a start one hadn't been crash tested. Media pick up on these things second, they've done the whole homologation(sp) process which is the fixing of parts.

is there a deadline that these homologation tests cannot be done before?

if there isnt then you have put yet another major inconvenience on top of the already stupidly hard task of bringing a new tub mid season, but if you can do homologation tests at any time it would still technically be possible to enter a car with a new tub at any point once it passes the tests

You can only do it once, that's the whole point. It's cost cutting. Once you've passed it, that's that.

You can't bring a new tub mid season fall stop.
So he then changed to new tub in Pre testing. Which again for the teams running new chassis they can't do.
