F1 2013 Testing: Week 3 Barcelona

Hamilton does faster time at Barca across testing afaik, a 1:21.5, not sure on tyres yet, sky will say soon.

If thats on softs, its still fastest, if its not on softs, it would likely be pretty amazing, if its on more than 3-4 laps it would be even better.

Unmarked tyres... so hard or soft.

lol, Merc trolling everyone, everyone asking why they haven't run soft tyres so they go and do unmarked tyre laps. haha.

He has however done 5 laps and is still out, seems almost everyone who does an uber lap ruins the tyres though and can't go nearly as fast... and judging by how slow he went the next lap, then sped up but still several seconds slower it does seem to indicate softs. Its still a great lap, it would just be epic if it wasn't softs.

Looks like he did 6 laps before pitting, Perez only did 2 laps for his, and ALonso, the timing website doesn't actually say when he did his fast lap, but he did several very short runs, and did several 1:22's in short runs so have to assume his fastest one was a 2-3 lapper as well.

wow, Ted confirms it was medium tyres and 6 laps of fuel, seriously, that is fast, and apparently very close to his pole on softs with Mclaren last year... on mediums with more fuel that is pretty freaking awesome.

EDIT:- apparently pole on a short run last year was 1:21.7, this was faster, on more fuel on the slower tyre. Merc have looked fast in most situations, but the key thing as always will be, can Merc keep the tyres together in hotter weather, if not, they'll suck, if they can, they've certainly gained more outright pace this year. Rosberg was 1.3seconds down on Hamilton's pole time last year, ultimately their quick lap time has certainly increased, but I attribute a lot of that down to Hamilton himself.

Mediums apparently, going from the live text on Sky, if so thats pretty fast:eek: that'll make a few people sit up.

I am positive that the unmarked are only soft or hard though

Edit:

11:53 We've been getting a lot of questions over email about the unmarked tyres and what they're for. We've been to ask Williams chief race engineer Xevi Pujolar about it.

11:54 Xevi Pujolar: "They were the Romanian tyres. They are the same compounds, soft and hard, but they are produced in Romania [in case transportation from Pirelli's main plant in Turkey is impossible] and they should be exactly the same standard compounds. Everyone has four sets. They come free. You have 100 sets for the year and these four are on top of the 100. Two sets are soft and two are hard."

Edit again:

09:47 @paulhembery: "Hamilton using prototype SOFT for his time. Tyres are identical to 2013 range, just back up production location."

lol, now someone else has said Pirelli say it was on softs, who knows, its very good either way.

Even more trolling, he's just put in the second fastest time of the day, 1:22.2, on softs, on the 4th lap of a stint, with apparently the fastest first second yet. I don't think I've seen anyone not do their fastest time on the first real fast lap. The normal soft now tyre now, and has at least 6 laps of fuel on board it would seem.

Ruddy hell, Hamilton goes 1:20.8, has to be on softs, first fast lap out of the pits, 7/10th's off his previous time, about a second faster than the second fastest time in Barca in all testing now.

I'm going to guess that is a one lap run and he'll be in soon, would like to see anyone do two fast laps in a row, show how bad the tyres drop off. saying that he's done a slow down lap and is still out... maybe not.

Really doubt on mediums, but he's now done a slow down lap and now a 1:24, so its not even a outlap, super lap, inlap which several of the other fastest laps across the weeks have done.

... and another lap, so at least 6 laps of fuel on this run... gets more and more impressive.

EDIT:- @ Steve, lol.

and another lap on the board...... I don't think anyone who has done under a 1:22.5 or so has done anything but 2-3 laps and in, Merc do their fast laps and stay out for 5-10 laps.... the more I see the more I think they have serious pace, or everyone has collectively got together to troll Hamilton, let him think the car is awesome then blow him away at Melbourne, and the latter is extremely unlikely(but would be hilarious :p ).

Autosport say mediums and they are on the track...

People on track say he was on yellows as he came in, I think one of the issues is people updating websites/feeds are often people "at home" filtering through their guys sending pictures and things back, IE sky just upped a picture of Hamilton on mediums but its just a picture from earlier this morning.

All signs point to softs...

it doesn't matter really, softs, its an brilliant lap, mediums its a epically brilliant lap.... either way its miles ahead of anyone else(so far) and looks very impressive compared to last year, its 1second ahead of Mclarens last year pole and 2.3 seconds almost faster than Merc's best quali time last year(well Q3, occasionally guys do a crap lap in Q3 and better in Q2). That's even ignoring time of day, number of guys on track and track condition, IE midday, hotter time of year and 10 cars going fast on softs to keep track temp/rubber on track in optimum condition.

Last year it would seem they didn't break into 1:21 at all in preseason testing, started off at 1:23 at the first test and was just above 1:22 at the end of the second test in Barca. So Mclaren went from 1:22.4 on final day at Barca last year, to 1:21.7 for pole in the actual race, both drivers at merc did 1:22.9 in the final 2 days at Barca last year... so massive improvement for Merc, over 2 seconds faster at same point of preseason testing while funnily enough 2 of the top 3 fastest times last year were Perez and Button in different cars.

Even more interesting is each of the 4 fastest times last year, over 1:22's were ALL a single fast lap then pit, while Merc are doing superb laps each time with more fuel.
