F1 2015 - Teams and Drivers - Who goes where?!

Well, they were told there would be a spending cap before they entered and that didn't happen thanks to pressure from the haves so they were at an immediate disadvantage as soon as the cap was shelved. IMO every team should get the same amount up front. The big teams, especially thee manufacturer teams can then spend extra if they like and they'll naturally get extra sponsors and therefore more money. The fact that the haves got the spending cap abolished before it even started immediately put Caterham, Marussia and HRT at a HUGE disadvantage and, TBH they tried gamely but couldn't manage to continue. The fact that any money due to Marussia is now shared between the teams is like as turkey voting for Christmas.

By the way chaps, if any team folds and is due to receive a payment at the end of the season then you'll get it. Great idea, lets make it as difficult as possible for the lower teams to succeed and actually make it in the haves interest for them to not make it.

Also they had to enter with a crap engine rather than being able to do a Force India or Sauber for example and get a reasonable engine/gearbox package done for them.

I actually agree with Eddie Jordan () about the whole thing...

BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan said: "There are four reasons why the three teams who entered F1 in 2010 have all failed.
"First, Caterham (previously Lotus), Marussia (previously Virgin) and HRT were promised that the sport would have a budget cap of 50m Euros and governing body the FIA failed to impose this.

"Secondly, the costs for an engine were about £5m last year but have gone up to £15m this season with the introduction of new turbo hybrid engines.

"Who's accountable? It's Bernie Ecclestone's job to make sure promises are adhered to, and these costs are not coming down next year even though the manufacturers originally said they would.

"Thirdly, teams have to use Ecclestone's freight but the costs of this are high. There used to be a £10m payment from the commercial rights holder to teams to support the freight costs but Ecclestone withdrew that two years ago.

"Fourthly, there is the gross disparity of $300m being skimmed off the top of the money allocated to pay the teams as a cash payment for the top five teams, Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Mercedes."

So, how long have you been a McLaren fan?

Never have followed teams, just drivers. It's always disspointing when a driver I like goes there. Even DC grew a personality when he was cut loose from the PR balls. For the money they spend and the engine deals they have had the last 20 years they have been ****.

True. When you consider that in the last 15 seasons they have won only 1 out of 30 championships, its a poor show. Worse than Ferrari, who are sacking bosses left right and centre.

Another thing I've noticed. Since Ron Dennis came back and took over then got rid of Martin Whitmarsh, I hardly hear from McLaren on the grid unless it's Jenson.

Whitmarsh and a few of their big name mechanics were always happily talking to Sky/Ted.

You do see Boullier quite often, but not as much as Whittmarsh (although Whitmarsh also had other "hats" to put on, in regards to F1 working group etc) but they are a lot less visible

I think it's mainly because they're doing absolutely bog all on track.

Disappointing as hell as a McLaren supporter.

I've been a McLaren supporter for years, 25 at least, even when 'our Nige' was too fat (or the car not big enough) to fit into it, the terrible Peugeot years, The iconic red and white Marlboro colours (even if I wasn't a fan of Prost) right through to the current Silver/Chrome scheme and the Alonso shenanigans, even if I still rate Alonso, who certainly used to bee one of the best drivers on the grid. The problem I'm having is that I don't like the fact they want to keep Magnussen (who I know is a 'rookie', but any rookie who has been destined for WDC's has shown this very early, something he's yet to show and I doubt he ever will) but he's been thoroughly outclassed all season where it matters. In the race and in the points. If they get rid of Jenson and get Alonso instead, along with waiting so long to announce anything at ALL I'm rapidly becoming not a fan of McLaren. They've consistently made **** calls from the pit wall and Jenson is experienced enough to question it or make his own calls. Had Lewis had another 2 seasons in him in 2007 in China he's probably have told the team he was coming in regardless of what they said. Would Jenson have let such a situation happen? IMO No.

McLaren have behaved without class and respect yet Jenson has never had a bad word to say about the whole debacle. He's literate, confident in front of camera and will almost speak to anyone. He's a Sponsors wet dream yet McLaren have treated him shamefully. Ron, you are an idiot.

Did JB say in the sky sports pre race interview with Brundle that he would, only consider top teams, like Ferrari?

I probably misheard him, but if he did say that then that's foolish of him. He could do wonders for Force India or Lotus. But if he wants to persue Iron Man instead then cya.

JB's in it to win races, not make up the numbers. Realistically you need manufacturer supported team to win. Better to leave on your own terms than end up plodding around at the tail end of the field in a poor car, like Barrichello did.

Exactly!

He knows his stock is high, so leave when your on a high and don't end up a hasbeen dragging a crate around the lower mid-field :p

I think he doing the right thing, hoping for a big seat, or bailing out :)

To add - I wasn't taking a cheap shot at Williams or Barrichello, it was just the most recent example that popped into my head. They had a bad few years when he happened to be there.

I'm glad Williams restructured, got rid of Loldonardo and have had a really good season in 2014.

I think Hill's a better comparison than Rubens. Hill won a title, left his team immediately after (though Williams didn't exactly break a sweat about it) and his motivation left soon after, to the point where he was totally and utterly destroyed in his last season.

Button seems to have maintained his desire and speed with far more dignity, but there's little point in him carrying on with little promise in a Force India or Lotus just because he's still capable of doing it.

Far better to go and try winning Le Mans before his inevitable move into commentary or punditry, which I'm also really looking forward to.

A few posts have nailed it here... agree about buttons class and the way hes handled the media etc.

Also dont want him to do a barrichello. I love rubens but he should perhaps have left when brawn finished. He had a strong run at the end of thay season. Would hurt seeing button drive midfield cars around and he obviously knows this. Top car or WEC which i will start following for the first time should he go there.

I watched a clip on youtube the other day and was pleasantly surprised to see how exciting the racing looks. It looks quite a bit purer than f1 too !

Done deal?

Fernando Alonso finalises switch to McLaren F1 team

Fernando Alonso's switch to the McLaren Formula 1 team is set to be confirmed before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, once the team knows who his team-mate will be.

Sources close to the Woking-based outfit have revealed that Alonso has now finalised a big-money move from Ferrari to McLaren next year, renewing a partnership that ended prematurely in 2007 after a tumultuous campaign.
