F1 2016 tyre rules

Here's an idea - let qualifying just be qualifying, 1 session job done. Let people use whatever tyres they please. Then let them race. And use whatever tyres they please. Does it really need to be this complex?

With regards to qualifying, I'd like to see the top 10 from the previous race given a bye for Q1.

Why? Some of the best racing recently has come from a top contender dropping out in Q1. Plus you would be gifting half the grid 2 sets of brand new unused tyres, which seems rather unfair.

How so? Other than a brief blip in 2005, tyres have been designed to wear out during a race ever since the early 80s when it became standard practice to make pit stops

Not going to bother figuring this out.
Only a casual watcher now

Quite incredible how much money you can throw at a sport and reduce entertainment
I think the 'teams choose tyres for race + must use 2' is my fav.
It allows you (with a good decision not based on financial clout) to either pull a blinder or make a mistake

And if your car is particularly hard/soft on tyres you aren't screwed by predetermined outside decision

Oh f1, how are you getting it so wrong

For someones whos watched F1 for over 25 years, spent $1000s over the years on merchandise and die casts since a kid.

I really dont care about these tyre rules. F1 is a mess and something needs to be done fast, when the die hards are fed up, things need to be done.

So what we're saying now is 3 compounds are chosen for a w/e - say Soft, Medium & Hard

At least one set has to be used in Q3 (the softest) but then the FIA specify 2 other compunds to be reserved for the race - say Soft & Hard (but could be Soft & Soft)

The team has to use at least 2 compunds in the race but 1 of them at least has to be 1 of the specified compounds above....

My head is spinning...

I can't wait for the commentators to try and explain this in the first race :)

The scripts will already be written. The teams chose their tyres for Australia last month!

In fact, why haven't they made the chooses public yet? They could use the 2 months to try to explain it...

The 14 week thing is a bit crazy but there must be a reason and I suspect it is manufacturing. They probably don't want to make more tyres than is absolutely necessary and given the ever-changing regulations you can't blame them for not wanting to have stock sitting around that they might never shift!

Its exactly that, and shipping too.

If they took all possible choices to each race, with 10 free choice sets per car, they would need to manufacture and ship 10 sets of each of the 3 compounds, so that's 10 × 3 × 22 × 4 = 2640 tyres, of which 2/3rds (1760) wouldn't be used. So I can see why they don't want to do it.

But the result is a massively complicated yet entirely irrelevant (as its a strategy that can't be changed) set of rules.

Personally after watching the teds notebook link in the opening post it is pretty clear,3 types instead of two, more possible strategies. worrying more than that and your over thinking it.
