Lando Norris signs up to McLaren until 2025; big commitment from him and sensible from McLaren to get him signed up early before other teams come sniffing
Ricciardo until 2023 which I'm surprised by, I thought his contract was up at the end of this year. Surely then O'Ward/Norris in 2024?

Apparently Red Bull were sniffing around Lando even before he signed for McLaren after his season in F2 and Mercedes were also interested. A Norris/Russell British super team would be awesome to see.

Not sure these longer contracts are good for the sport. It be nice to see top drivers moving between teams more.

Norris vs. Ricciardo is going to be one of the more interesting teammate battles this year; interesting to see whether DR can recover his reputation.

I expect Norris would have been high on lists at Red Bull and Merc for 2023; I'd like to see O'Ward in F1 although I think he basically needs to win the Indy title to get a Superlicense!

RB sniffing around because they might not be able to/want to pay Max what he wants from his next contract. The $100m a year from Oracle should help though. Don't RBR actually make a profit from F1?

I imagine they will pay anything to keep Max.

Lewis and Max literally made a mockery of the rest of the field and their teammates last year. I think any team would pay pretty much anything for either one of them (maybe less /shorter contract for Lewis as he is getting on a bit now).

Now it hits the budget cap though. Red Bull might decide the car matters more.

Only if your confident that your car is a decent step ahead the rest. If its close like last year, you need the best driver you can get. Perez and Bottas were hilariously slow in race pace compared with Max and Lewis.

Can you provide an up to date source for that? Because as I understand it, that isn't true in the agreed set of rules. Top management are exempt but not drivers.
First one I could find on Google, plenty of others: https://racingnews365.com/how-f1s-budget-cap-could-shake-up-the-pecking-order

From the article:

Exclusions to the cap are (presently) power units, marketing/hospitality, team travel - to prevent cutbacks on accommodation and flight classes - and car demonstrations and heritage (museum) operations. Crucially, despite drivers being major performance differentiators, their stipends are also (currently) excluded from the cap, in turn enabling better-funded teams to gain distinct advantages in this quarter.

Equally, the top three salaries paid to team personnel are excluded, so superstar designers or strategists can still make a massive difference. Still, the cap redresses most imbalances, although such are the facilities and operational advantages accrued by major teams over the years that, according to AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost and Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner, momentum will carry them for three years, at least.

I wonder if these new cars are going to require or favour a particular driving style and how much that style might be removed from the previous generation. It could possible be that we get someone who just gels with the car and enters beast mode like Vettel did in the blown diffuser.

If my understanding is correct it seems like the new cars will be more front limited now. Obviously drivers adapt as Max has done with the RB twitchy/loose rear which he said isn't his normal style, but certain characteristics will favour some drivers more than others. Kimi for instance hated and struggled with cars/setups that inherent understeer.
