Good question. I’m not sure how well that would work for the high speed areas of the track as the relative negative pressure under the cars might reduce or do funny things to the air flow needed for optimal cooling. Though I guess you could use exhaust the areas out at the bottom/rear of the car to reduce this. It’s a long time since I did physics though…….
That'd be more of a positive for high speed straights though. Perhaps something they could tune to the circuit.

Just an out there thought... If the mechanical and structural aspect of the car is indeed as they say it is the same as the car they ran at Barcelona (Yes I'm highly skeptical). Is there anything in the rule book that can stop them from running both designs through the year, fuller sidepods for medium/high downforce, and Sans sidepods for high speed low downforce?
I mean it is more likely that they just didnt want to let the cat out of the bag too early. However it might (Heavy emphasis on might!) explain such radically different body designs.

I thought this as well. Runs the risk of not understanding both specifications as much as if they had one concept.

The cars really do like they can follow better and closer than before. These regs might really work.

I really wish they would just let Sky cover this in full instead of using some of the F1TV presenters - they're almost all universally dreadful except the commentator

Huh, F1TV uses the commentary feed from Sky? They don't have their own commentators to use.

Checo puts it in the kitty litter, bringing out the red flag. With so little time left, I guess that's it for the day (except for Haas).

Edit: Yup, confirmed as the end of the day. Final times/laps are (via The Race)

1. Gasly (AlphaTauri) 1m33.902s, C4, 102 laps
2. Sainz (Ferrari) 1m34.359s, C3, 51 laps
3. Leclerc (Ferrari) 1m34.531s, C3, 64 laps
4. Stroll (Aston Martin) 1m34.736s, C4, 49 laps
5. Albon (Williams) 1m35.070s, C4, 104 laps
6. Norris (McLaren) 1m35.356s, C2, 49 laps
7. Bottas (Alfa Romeo) 1m35.495s, C3, 66 laps
8. Vettel (Aston Martin), 1m35.706s, C3, 39 laps
9. Russell (Mercedes) 1m35.941s, C3, 59 laps
10. Perez (Red Bull) 1m35.977s, C3, 137 laps
11. Hamilton (Mercedes) 1m36.365s, C3, 62 laps
12. Alonso (Alpine) 1m36.745s, C3, 24 laps
13. Ocon (Alpine) 1m36.768s, C2, 42 laps
14. Zhou (Alfa Romeo) 1m37.164s, C3, 54 laps
15. Fittipaldi (Haas) 1m37.422s, C2, 46 laps

So, laps by team

Red Bull 137
Mercedes 121
Alfa Romeo 120
Ferrari 115
Williams 104
AlphaTauri 102
Aston Martin 88
Alpine 66
McLaren 49
Haas 46 (but they have another hour, I believe)

Alfa will be glad to have put a decent number of laps together. Not great for Alpine and McLaren, Haas are probably okay since they're being given extra hours to make up for lost time.

Ah ok, seems the photos I saw this morning were older ones. Yes, Mercs new side pods are smaller. Kind of an inverse of the Willians which are also small. All depends on the angle you catch them at, as to how they look. I don't have much of an opinion on them. I'm guessing they aren't really a game changer given what I've seen so far of the morning replay.

Red flag, due to an aerorake falling off Stroll's car.

Just reading through this thread and been as been at work all day and seen nothing.

That could be an expensive problem for Aston, I've made one of these aerorakes for another team in the past and it's from a solid billet and takes quite a while to make.

I’d quite like to see a top down view. From the side all the silver just messes with my aging eyes.
