F1 Testing 2010

I do hope McLaren aren't about to get into a world of hurt with the stewards at the opening race re: the diffuser....would be nice if we could start this season without any stupidity of that sort and the usual accusations of bias that get thrown around whenever it happens!

Agreed, would be nice if this year is a clean fight with no legal challenges.

What's the mast on top of the Ferrari at the end of this video, something to do with telemetry/datalogging? It can't be part of the race trim surely, it's about 2ft high!

IIRC it's to get a more accurate speed reading, probably similar to a pitot tube on an airplane.

Ferrari and McLaren both look awesome on track there. The Mercedes looks very awkward in comparison.

Is this the first time Schumacher has been round Valencia in an F1 car? If so those times are even more impressive!!

Pitot tube. Gets the airspeed. More reliable than other methods - also includes the effect of winds on the car in the speed.

Given Ferrari's impressive speed, Alonso must be grinning ear to ear.

To be fair though, we havent yet seen Hamilton/Button in a McLaren, who are likely to be more competitive than Paffett.

Or Ferrari were show boating running on fumes to get out of the Italian headlines about a 'B' spec F10 :D

I read somewhere that the 'B' spec isn't because the current car is a dog, but because a new aero bloke they nabbed from toyota has an idea for a double diffuser with a hole the size of an A3 sheet of paper.

Could be bull, but take from that what you will.

Apparently the rule only applies from 45cm forward from the back of the headrest. So the vents that far forward are legal.

Interestingly they're not evident on the launch car, however there is a suspicious looking panel bolted over the area in question.

McLaren have cracked out the green aero paint apparently, oh noes! :p

Edit - might have been more of a BBC message board rumour :o

They have panels which can cover them. For Paffet's first run yesterday only the left one was open - in the afternoon they opened them both up.

Yeah - just seen the BBC update after not seeing any news anywhere else...

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt at Valencia: "I return from my special mission at McLaren HQ with news on the 'fluminescent' paint daubed along the side of the car. First of all, the team say there is 'no cause for concern'. They have been using the paint, known as flow-viz, for periods during both days of testing but say it is completely normal and does not flag up underlying aerodynamic problems. Lewis Hamilton has returned to team HQ to say he's happy with the car this morning while test driver Gary Paffett reported back that there was a close correlation between the data coming from the simulator and the track during his running on Monday."
