i was thinking that if you were very good with the clutch you could work it just like the throttle and not spin off. however, you do have a point, the exhaust is doing WAY less this year because of the position, not just the volume of air, so i doubt its worth the effort of making an engine and a clutch that could cope with that
 
Not to mention the fact that other than moving away from stationary, the drivers dont control the clutch.

But engine mappings and off throttle blowing have been rendered useless this year through the restrictions on where the exhaust pipes must exit. Rather than try and eek out some small advantage with the new regs, the teams will likely just remove any off throttle blowing and use the increased fuel efficiency to reduce the size of the fuel tanks and therefore the weight of fuel.
 
The idea that a loss of a little bit of rear down force is going to suddenly throw a number of guys off for long periods is just ridiculous. However, that won't stop the press harping on about it, and people just lapping it up blindly.


I take your point about drivers coming up through different formula and completely agree, but also remember that they didnt use Pirelli either, and given that one of the reasons the racing was better was because the tyres (for a time at least last season) were less grippy than the Bridgestone's they replaced.

Now taking into account that the 2012 Pirelli 's are even less grippier (or are meant to last fewer laps), plus the loss in rear down force - driving the same way as they did last season should mean a greater loss in laps / set of tyres

Now it may only be a difference of one or two laps if the viewers are lucky, but there is nothing to stop us hoping its more like 5- 10 laps difference or more

(if this theory has holes then pleae point them out - but surely it seems reasonable?)
 
Watch the 2012 tyre video posted in this thread. The new profile of the tyres should see them last longer than the 2011 tyres and offer more grip. That's what I got anyway, not sure about the over all grip with the loss of EBD.

hmm thats disappointing after all Pirelli themselves were saying end of last year each different type of tyre was going to be getting a grade "softer " - hmm actually thinking of it that way I guess you are right, I was thinking of it was the other way round , ie the hard tyres of 2012 would be near the equivelant of the soft's of 2011 (ie tyres lasting less laps than previously) but it isnt :(
 
No I think that is the case Frank. The Hard tyre from 2011 is no more.

They have improved the compounds themselves so that they last longer and are more predictable, but over all have moved the whole scale further towards soft. So while the soft tyre of 2011 will last longer, it will become the medium, or even the hard in 2012. If that makes sense?

They planned on not using the hard tyre for the whole second half of 2012, but they brought it back for 1 race late in the session (India, possibly)?

From that angle it looks as though its blowing straight onto the rear wheel?

Looks like it but don't think it would be. I would guess its aimed at the ducts/fins between the wheel and rear wing supports. Bit hard to work out from that angle.
 
Is that exhaust legal? I thought the rules stated the last 100mm of the pipe had to be round? Unless they are claiming that moulded bit is actually bodywork and not part of the exhaust.

Scarbs suggested on the launch that they could angle the exhaust towards the lower fins and rear suspension to try to get an aero advantage.

I do love the chrome paint on the McLarens though :)

I am sure we will see lots of iterations before the first race.
 
Ah cool.

There is no requirement for anything on the cars to be legal until P1 in Australia, so they could be experimenting. That said, there is little benefit in testing things you couldn't use.
