F1 Testing 2012 - Week 1, Jerez

Not to mention the fact that other than moving away from stationary, the drivers dont control the clutch.

But engine mappings and off throttle blowing have been rendered useless this year through the restrictions on where the exhaust pipes must exit. Rather than try and eek out some small advantage with the new regs, the teams will likely just remove any off throttle blowing and use the increased fuel efficiency to reduce the size of the fuel tanks and therefore the weight of fuel.

There have been two changes to the rules which affect the use of EBDs. One is the positioning of the exhaust pipes which limit the possibilities of blowing. Secondly the ECU rules have been changed which prevent the use of hot blowing and limit the use of cold blowing. The throttle plate position is now more closely linked to the pedal position.

The EBD was controlled via the ecu, when the driver was off throttle the engine was opening up the exhaust valves and spitting fuel into the exhaust, or atleast that was my impression of it!

Someone posted up on here last year about webber doing so well in 2010 because he had worked out how to drive the car with a bit of throttle through the corners to get a bit more out of his diffuser, this was Pre-EBD IIRC.

Might be wrong though!

The EBD consists of two things. One is the positioning of the exhaust pipe exits to supply gases to the diffuser. Secondly was the ECU mapping which was setup to supply flow to the diffuser when the driver was off the throttle, which made the rear grip far less throttle sensitive and increased the grip round the entire corner, rather than just the exit.

Webber's advantage over Vettel in the early stages of 2010 was still with an EBD, but without the off throttle blowing Webber was better able to make use of the system than his teammate.

Ah cool.

There is no requirement for anything on the cars to be legal until P1 in Australia, so they could be experimenting. That said, there is little benefit in testing things you couldn't use.

to throw a dummy to rival teams / to hide what you are actually doing?:D:D

You are of course completely right - with everything so finely balanced these days Im guessing its impossible to actually do the above (without mucking up your own data and generally wasting time)

Off the record Hamilton is disappointed with the McLaren MP4-27

Feb.16 (GMM) Behind the scenes, 2007 world champion Lewis Hamilton is quietly concerned about McLaren’s early performance with their 2012 Formula car, according to media reports.

Auto Motor und Sport reports that the first whiff of the Briton’s worry emerged last week, when the MP4-27 was tested over four days at Jerez.

Marca sports daily claims Hamilton confided to his former McLaren teammate Heikki Kovalainen at Jerez that he is “disappointed” with his new car.

“When I saw that all the other cars are high at the front, it did make me wonder if we had done the right thing,” the 2008 world champion, referring to the ‘step’ nose trend that McLaren has sidestepped, is quoted as saying.

Hamilton was quicker than his teammate Jenson Button at Jerez, with his 1.19 laptime set on Thursday close to Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull pace on the same day.

The previous day, however, Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber had been the quickest of the 2012 car runners in the RB8.

And when referring to his 1.19, Hamilton admitted that the lap was set while McLaren was being “aggressive”, implying that he was light on fuel.

If so, the MP4-27 is at least a full second off Lotus’ Jerez pace.

There are more clues: asked about the change in blown diffuser rules, Briton Hamilton said the MP4-27 is “difficult to control in the fast corners”.

That contrasts with Vettel’s comment that, “In the fast corners I don’t feel very much difference to before (in 2011)”.

On the record, he said: “I feel quite positive about where the car is at the moment and I’m confident that the guys can push it forward.

“You’ve got to remember that everyone is just focusing on their own programmes. It’s not a contest for who’s the fastest at the moment,” Hamilton insisted.

“Over the coming weeks we’ll get a better indication of where everyone is.”

HRT not taking part in the second test next week, as expected. They are hoping to run at the final test with the 2012 car.

Not heard anything from LOLMarussia yet.

It's really not looking great for either of them at the moment, especially when you consider this has been a fairly light year with regards to rule changes really.

So, an article from GMM... Generally Made-up Media

Not so much a pinch of salt needed, more like the entire reserves used on the roads over the last 2 winters
