F1 Testing 2012 - Week 1, Jerez

14:54 @Strangautosport says: Yes Hendrik, Mercedes is using a full specification 2011 W02. The idea behind its programme for this test is to do a back-to-back comparison of Pirelli's 2012 tyres against the data it has for last year's rubber. Mercedes doesn't want any added extraneous data from new parts. The new car will be run at the next test at Barcelona on February 21."

if its full 2011 wo2 specification why do they keep hiding the rear of the car and what are the black boxes behind the sidepods

Maybe Ferrari tried to replace the exhaust air with air from somewhere else to maintain their rake angle, but at a guess from the testing times, it doesn't appear to be working.

If Ferrari had found some magic improvement over the rest of the field they would surely sandbag through testing to not give it away? My point is these times mean nothing except for the teams themselves.

Oh I've no doubt, but from the reports I've seen it looks a bit of a handful to drive with the backend sliding, not getting into corners etc. not just that it's only being driven at 90%.

It's entirely possible it's just Massa being his usual self though. Ie. crap.

Yet the feed on Autosport said there weren't any apparent areas where the Ferrari seemed to be losing time.

Best just enjoy the fact that there is F1 activity again and not bother with trying to 2nd guess how fast the cars are.

how did you get a tour? do you work for a sponsor or something?

I was doing some work for them, I work for a big company, our logo is on another car.

Very suprised they let you anywhere near the 2012 car.

I wouldn't know what I was looking at anyway, I just walked passed it twice in a half assembled state.

I have done work for Redbull and Force India too but never got to go to site.

Day 2 times

Ignoring the Merc 2011 time, the quickest 2012 car was 0.5 sec quicker today than yesterday.

Exhaust gases was used to seal the diffuser allowing higher rake angle and creating higher downforce. Now without the EBD there's no way to seal the diffuser, hence teams going back to normal ride heights.

What is he deal with the stepped noses this year? Seems interesting that mclaren havent gone down that route - have to wonder if they have something hidden away?

New rules lower nose height, but same tub height. Most teams (all?) other than mclaren had high noses so they have kept to maximum nose height. To get more airflow under nose and Increase downforce. Mclaren last year did not have high nose and favoured lower nose and lower CoG. So no one in that aspect has found anything. They're just evolving last years cars to the new rules.
