F1 Testing 2014: Week 1 Jerez

Thing is, TR has done 20 laps today, which isn't great and they haven't had a great first two days. But the Red Bull seems to be significantly worse off than them at this stage. Of course in the 20 laps today Vergne hasn't done a lap within 20 seconds of the pace the Merc's have been doing. Are TR going around super slowly to not overheat, or some other issue. If the TR isn't overheating, why is Red Bull's, more to the point why is it overheating in what is very cold conditions.

EDIT:- actually air temp up to 10c and track temp apparently 20c, so higher than the 8c track temps earlier obviously, not warm/hot but not that cold either now.

11 laps for Red Bull 160 for Merc, 104 for Ferrari. They can't necessarily make up the laps at future tests, though they can run harder. The problem is the lack of testing parts/settings, with so few laps they have no idea where the car is. They may get on the track and find they need say way more downforce but all their current new development is more speed. Knowing where to go between first and second test has to be crucial and they can't really have a clue at this point.

I wonder if they'll be back out today at all.

Also, where are Marussia? We're half-way through the day already! I want to see if someone has managed to build something uglier than the Caterham. :p

The marussia looks ok. Similar nose to the Williams but different colours

The reason for the stoppage hasn't yet emerged, but this is worrying for Red Bull given that the new RB10 has managed a grand total of 11 complete laps in two-and-a-half days.

The technical rumour mill in the paddock suggests that Renault is less than pleased with Red Bull's installation of the control electronics in its 2014 car.

While this is just a rumour, Red Bull has done the fewest laps of any of the teams that has run so far, so it's clear something has gone wrong.

Rumours are that Mercedes engines are running at 13,000 rpm so another 2,000 rpm to her yet :)

There's got to be a reason why the Red Bull is having problems that the Caterham has not.

Quote from the BBC feed:
BBC F1 commentary producer Tony Dodgins: "I'd gone up to the first corner when Daniel Ricciardo came out for a second time in the Red Bull. He went straight back in and I could see in the distance what looked like smoke coming from the back of the car as it came to a halt. A colleague reports that there was a hole cut in the rear bodywork just ahead of the rear wheels and through the gap you could see something glowing orange and sparking. One of the mechanics put a powder extinguisher on it, which will have explained the smoke."

+1

If Merc, Mercedes, Ferrari and RBR all all vying for the top spot this season will be epic (despite the butt-ugly cars).

As much as I was Hamilton to win the WDC, it's going to be dull if he (or any driver) won it in the way Vettel won in 2011 or 2013…

I doubt it, I think one power train is going to have a distinct advantage. Its not looking like Renault, so have to see how Ferrari and Mercedes power trains shape up,

Hamilton hasn't been out in quite a while, longer than you'd think for just a long/earlier lunch than everyone else. He was 20 laps clear of everyone else but has been sat at 45laps for ages. Considering how smoothly the car was going and the want to get laps in, not entirely sure why he's not out running.

Maybe double checking the car before giving the go ahead to play around maxed out? who knows.

Williams started off fairly slow but got a good amount of laps in so far, Force India not getting much done though, 8 laps is poor compared to the other Merc runners.

Reports that Red Bull are finished for the day, and mechanics are cutting away at the electronics enclosures to try and free up extra room/cooling. 13 laps in three days.

Magnussen's just starting his afternoon running too.
