F1 Testing 2014: Week 1 Jerez

It makes no difference once your into the double points races. I.e. if a guy wins the WDC with 2 races left, he would have still won with normal points, as proportionally the gaps are the same in terms of points available.

Double points in a single race just cuts a race from someones buffer. I.e. if you won with 3 races to go under normal points, that would be 2 races to go under double points for the last race.

But if its close then it wrecks the entire season, look at JBs year. started strong and went off, he would have been screwed out of the championship. It is just such a ridiculous idea.

Or LH year, rather than having a nail biting finish.

It is so utterly retarded to get more points for one race over enough.

I think Sky are really struggling to justify an F1 channel, hence you get stuff like they are putting out now.

Anyone got up to date viewing figures?

Oh its totally retarded, don't get me wrong.

But double points for 1 race is slightly less retarded than double points for 3 or more. The double points need to be after the point the championship would have otherwise been won. I.e. Button in 2009, won with 1 race to go. With double points for the last race it would have pushed the title battle to the last race. With double points for the last 3 races it would have made no difference.

Double for the last 3 races suggests most championships are won with at least 3 races to go, which they aren't.

Its a dead channel for everything other than race weekends. Its on its own because there simply isn't space on the other Sports channels for the volume of prime time content F1 has.

Its a shame, they could do so much more with it.

Like what?

The F1 Show and the race weekend stuff is great, but there isn't the need for much else.

What I hope is they make a Sky Sports Motors style channel and put IndyCar and any other motorsport based content they have on it.

As it is now its just F1 on Sky Sports that has its own slot so it doesn't conflict with football and other SS1 and 2 content. If they could put it on SS1 they would. Its just that for 1% of the year they have content running in paralell that needs 5 channels.

For a start expand Teds time slots. They could do far more technical shows, seeing as they have a dedicated channel.
They could do more feature shows. They should show the support races or try and get the rights to them (not sure who has them).

Not sure what you mean by this? I've not noticed any difference in their quality of programming.

It varies by race weekend but some notepads are just totally devoid of any content, and the pre/post-race stuff from Herbert/Hill/Fake Jake always seem about half an hour too long.

I understand it, they have a channel to fill, but hours of output doesn't equal quality.

Still about a thousand times better than listening to Ben Edwards though.

They show all the support races except the Porsche Supercup and the few regional ones that support races like Australia.

F1, GP2 and GP3 are all on SSF1 as they are Bernie owned broadcasting rights.

Double points is just a stupid idea, it doesn't solve anything

It does though, it solves the problem of potential low viewing figures for Bernie, and that's all he's interested in, he's not bothered about what the real fans want. $$$

Yeah this is it really. Don't ask yourself "does it make sense?", ask yourself whether it has a chance of interesting people who have never watched F1 before.

You know Bernie has zero say in the regulations, right?

F1 is a sport governed by the FIA, not FOM. Sure he's vocal and has an ability to influence, but he's not in any position of being able to define rules.

I doubt it will solve that at all.

I doubt it too but I'm trying to think of what goes on in Bernie's head and giving an explanation as to why he comes up with remarkably daft ideas like double points races and sprinkler systems on the track.

In his own perception he is the F1 "supremo" ringmaster, and he wants as many people coming along to his Circus as possible.

Anyway's we're probably deviating somewhat from the theme of this thread... how cool did the Ferrari sound when powering down btw! It's that sound you can hear in decleration and on acceleration - a mixture of turbo and the energy regeneration/recovery systems, THAT is one lovely sound!

Really? All I could think is it sounded like a Hoover spinning down.

I am quite comforted by the concensus that nobody is anywhere near 15k rpm yet. But a crowd of people watching F1 cars track side without a single one with earplugs in just feels wrong.

It's that sound but louder and with a lot of other sound textures going on around it when on track. I was quite taken aback by how quiet the cars sounded when the notebook first started though, just a passing breeze almost :\ Yet in youtube videos some clips make them sound much louder.

Just have to wait and see what they sound like when everythings hooked up and switched on.
