F1 Testing 2014: Week 1 Jerez

Nice write up again, the engines have been pretty much rev limited all day though regarding the sound. Will be interesting to hear what they sound like on a qually sim thats for sure!

I can't upload to YouTube atm but if anyone has an email address I can send a short clip of the Torro Rosso's engine woes from this morning, and they can host it, if there's any interest. Just post the email addy here.

McLaren Mercedes With Jenson Button F1 Jerez Testing

Torro Rosso Renault with Jean-Éric Vergne - F1 Jerez Testing

Don't know if it's meant to be higher quality but hopefully good enough.

Thanks for all the feedback The_Abyss :)

Good having someone trackside to pick up on some of the finer details.
Do you get to wander around the paddock at all?

Know I keep saying it but I love the new sounds! That powering down whiney sound on deceleration then acceleration is amazing.

That Toro Rosso sounds broken

It's crazy, isn't it? I do hope Renault sort their issues, and the Renault-powered team sort theirs. It would be bad to have them start too far behind the others. On the other hand, it does increase Marussia's chances of being the first of the newer teams to score a point. :p

Is this a case of a bad product from Renault though or are the teams second-guessing Renault? Presumably the engines have been tested extensively out of the cars so you have to assume it's either got a very small sweet spot that hasn't been found yet, or some teams are trying to be a bit too clever.

Nothing to do with the Engine or packaging from Renault as far as I understand (well the engine may well be inferior to the Mercedes engine) :p, but moreover it's how Adrian Newey and his colleagues have gone about packing it into the RB10. Cooling and wiring issues predominantly I imagine.

No worries :)

No paddock access unfortunately. A few of the teams in our hotel but they're split into day and night shifts so we can only grab a few minutes with them at the end of each day. Marussia chaps are funny - they seem to know they're on a hiding to nothing but are incessantly cheerful :)

The chaps from Pirelli are good value too - they seem quite happy with the 2014 tyre but just don't want to talk about last year - there's a feeling they just got stitched up.

That would imply all the Renault teams are doing something wrong though, and I wouldn't have expected a smaller team like Toro Rosso ignore any advice Renault were giving them.

Will be interesting to see what the Lotus is like when it finally arrives.

The McLaren bits that's everyones talking about look like like they would produce a load of drag. They're near vertical like an air brake.

As for the Renault engines, they would have been tested at load to destruction, so it's obviously an installation issue for the teams.

.

But that's the beauty of it, they're only like that when the cars going slow, therefore the car rides higher and you don't care about drag, but you do care about downforce. When its running on the straight the downforce pushed the car to the floor and opens up the suspension allowing the air to pass through. So its a double bonus, more downforce when you want it and less downforce when you don't want it.

There's no doubt more drag as a result of them being there even when the gaps have opened up a bit, but if they can achieve a higher cornering speed due to more slow speed downforce then it's a trade off worth making.
