This is why they start off at 1:35 laps and build up
If he went out and did a 1:18 pushing the car straight off, could have been a much worse crash somewhere else on the track.
Not a great indication for failure though, breaking off without pushing too hard? Hopefully he tapped it going over a corner or something and it's not a too weak connection from wing to nose.
jesus that pic of the Ferrari, it really is just awful looking. Want to see some detailed pics, can't quite work out why the Merc has the shorter nose that doesn't stick out beyond the wing... but doesn't seem to have such a steep/terrible looking nose.
Plenty of cars are literally getting part way down the pitlane and going back in. They might go out, and find the 6th gear isn't working, or DRS isn't opening, or kers isn't working, or the rear brakes aren't working, or the readouts on the wheel are not working or useless. There is like 1000 things that can go wrong, or not work well.
It's really a case of build car, think it's done as it should be, send it out, go between 3 metres and 3miles and find a dozen things not doing what they should, go back in and look at them, think you fix them, go out again and they didn't fix it, made 3 new problems, or made the initial problem worse.
