McLaren caused a few surprising faces few minutes ago when Hamilton drove out pit. Many media laughed at the rear, as McLaren's car looked like a kart. It appears that the movements of the McLaren car and will monitor above the diffuser, allowing the entire width of a measuring instrument is placed.

Trying to find a pic :p

Best picture i could find :D :D

I must say, this year's cars are looking beautiful.

And today, we shall finally get an idea of McLaren's performance relative to RBR and Ferrari, both of which seem to have decent cars for 2011.

for the people wondering, in testing you can run any car configuration, it doesn't have to comply with the rules and regs that govern this years season(which start friday practice in bahrain) This is why Mclaren are able to use airflow devices to measure car efficiency. My guess is that this info can be directly fed into the simulator in woking allowing for faster virtual development during the season

Shock horror, Honda (I mean Mercedes) have produced another shockingly poor car! I hope I'm made to eat those words, but its not looking good :-(

What makes you guys think Mercedes have produced a lemon?

Last week Mercedes weren't too hot, but for whatever reason, MSc was very positive and happy regarding the way the car was performing. Brawn was also talking about winning races in it, which would suggest that Mercedes feel they have a good car.

Its always difficult to judge race performance on the test sessions, you don't know if the team are playing a games in terms of not revering their true pace.

It's testing at the end of the day so it will take some time to get the car dialed in I guess

That said the last couple of years testing have been indicative of how fast the top teams are

Although this point is always talked about, if you look at testing over the last decade or so then one thing is fairly clear. Sometimes the fastest cars in testing (top 1 or 2) are running on fumes trying to make a statement (pull in sponsors) - although the top teams rarely engage in this. However the plum slowest team of tests rarely (if ever) start winning races because they have been sandbagging. Being plum slowest usually means you have built a lemon (although you can sugar coat that as you like - as most teams do!).

AUTOSPORT F1 editor @eddstrawF1 says:

I have serious concerns about where Mercedes is at the moment, although I must add the caveat that drawing conclusions based on the first test is very dangerous. Ignoring the laptimes, I'm hearing that those inside the team are not delighted with the way the car is performing. If that is the case, Mercedes could be looking at a similar year to 2010.

on other forums im sick of hearing our "amus experts" already know to the tenth how fast a each car is...

i swear ocuk seems to have more inteligent members than the so called "motor sport" forums like autofail etc

williams were topping testing times in 2009 or whenever it was and come the races they were no where.. hrt could probablt top the time sheets if they ran on fumes.

also its a test so the cars dont have to follow the rules and could be running well under the minimum weight for all we know, we dont know if teams are using ballast or not like they probably need to for the real sessions
