*** FACTORIO: Space Age **** DLC pack announced!

Meanwhile I started the tutorial again, got to the electricity one, got eaten by bugs whilst I was trying to work out how to do something simple :D

Conflicting, on one hand I think well if I turn enemies to non aggressive then I can learn the other bits, but then I don't feel like I'm playing it properly.

It's Factorio, you can play however you want! :D

Of course but there's all the defence stuff that is then pointless and the weapons etc.
I might potter about on a relaxed mode and then play on standard settings when I know I can actually defend myself and not get my whole base destroyed and never make any progress.

i think you can turn biters on / off at any time. So just have them off as you set up, then back on when you think you can automate defence

No I have..the ones way far out on the map. I'm saying upgraded personal lasers with exos make short work of them..big difference.
Definitely a different idea of short work then! Having no trouble killing them, finding unloading into them with a rocket launcher is the quickest way in our play through. Takes a second or 2 under full fire to kill them.

Problem is when they approach the base, they're always managing to smash through the outer perimeter despite the wall of defences including static rocket launcher towers and turrets before being killed. Pretty constant stream of bots rebuilding the outer base walls!

Starting to zone out the "base being destroyed" notifications!

Is that a console command or something? I only saw the option when setting up a new game.

ah yeah, sorry I've seen to many mods over the years that things blur a little.

/c game.player.surface.peaceful_mode = true - sets peaceful mode on

/c game.map_settings.enemy_expansion.enabled = true - stops biters expanding

/c local surface=game.player.surface
for key, entity in pairs(surface.find_entities_filtered({force="enemy"})) do
entity.destroy()
end

kills all existing biters

You could turn off or lower pollution but keep the biters, also roll for a map with lots of trees and greenery.

I find the best way is heading out to destroy the bases that your pollution is about to reach

I used to use a command to turn off or significantly lower the portion of evolution based on time passed, and raised the other factors on pollution and number killed to compensate. That way I could play at a more leisurely pace in the early part of the game and it always seemed a bit strange to me why Biters would evolve just by sitting around waiting.

Just a tip if you want an easier ride for your first playthrough play on a forest world. Forest eats up pollution meaning you will get attacked much less.

The difference is massive..I did my first (failed) playthrough on a desert world not realising how much more difficult it was. Started again on a forest map and felt I didn't even need to tech into military science until late game.

I think I will have to do something just so I can actually get to grips with it, otherwise I may just be put off from having my base destroyed all the time. Just until I figure out some more basics I guess.

Got past that tutorial level, I managed to automate more than my other attempt. Though I did waste a bit as I automated magazines to the turrets but they can only store 10 so I had a full conveyor. Definately get that dopamine hit when something works.

I've read that Space DLC changes the core game quite a bit, so I assume I may as well carry on with the base game before I bother with the DLC, or do you think the game is improved with it?

it gets harder from what I can tell.

since I'm useless to buy for, I've told my OH that she can get me it for Christmas - so no factorio for me until the new year (I'm working over the holidays)

I've gone to Vulcanus first, great planet to get rich resources :-) Green belts are amazing!

Just arrived on Fulgora - looks fun so far.

Taking my time and over engineering my bases before moving onto the next part.

Here is my Navuis base.

Its very different. Core game you just get a rocket up and job done. Though getting the rocket up is much much harder but researching certain tech is easier compared to DLC.

Space Age allows you to launch a rocket at blue science and makes the resources to do so significantly lighter, BUT certain tech is locked behind tech trees from other planets (ie prod mod3s)
Essentially if you get the DLC you should really start a new game, and not continue the old one imo. I would definitely launch a rocket in base game, get some basic logistics up, explore circuits, trains and understand how pollution/evolution works before going into the DLC otherwise your going to have a nightmare.

I actually abandoned the tutorial after the one I did because it was more difficult having to start with a load of stuff already built and try to figure out how it worked, as opposed to when I build it myself and I know because I built it.

Loving the new circuits network, being able to connect circuits to factories and have them change the recipe is awesome, also you can connect turrets to the circuit network and have them set priority targets etc.

So many small little improvements.
