Faecal bacteria join the commute

most public and work places have taps which turn themselves off, unlike homes.

They don't at my uni, and same where I worked for my summer placement

You are kidding right? I am sure your co-workers and house mates enjoy touching the doors which have a fine coating of your urine.

FWIW I do wash my hands, I just often wonder if it's a pointless task, I just do it out of routine more than anything though.

More than one in four commuters has bacteria from faeces on their hands, an investigation suggests.

Scientists from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine swabbed 409 people at bus and train stations in five major cities in England and Wales.

DIRTY HANDS:

Newcastle - men 53%, women 30%
Liverpool - men 36%, women 31%
Birmingham - men 21%, women 26%
Cardiff - men 15%, women 29%
Euston (London) - men 6%, women 21%

You dirty bunch up in Newcastle :p :o

My mate always did say that the dirtiest girls are in Liverpool...

I do appreciate you point though about how clean the sink and taps though, I also never touch the door out if I can help it and if I have to I use the very bottom and/or top of the handle as I figure fewer people use that part.

I may have OCD about this though.

I would agree with Admiral Huddy though that London only has Euston counted so the actual figure would no doubt be a lot higher - but it was none the less surprising to see how many more women than men were caught "red handed" at Euston!

Well what did they expect? every time I go to the look at work or a public place I see more people go out without washing their hands than do.

So you think it's ok to have **** on your hands? you must be quite selfish to think in such a way because unless you never leave your room/house then you’re going to be touching things that other people will as well and they may well go home to kids or work with kids and pass on these bacteria.

Children have developing immune systems but it doesn’t stop them from being ill more than you or I.

Same goes for the aged but of course their immune systems are on a degrading state!

Yea we do need some bacteria to keep the immune system updated and we get such bacteria by default anyway. The article is in relation to bacteria that causes specific illnesses, something your immune system won’t stop should you catch one of them so immune system arguments go out the window.

So are these bacteria exclusivly found in poop or just naturally about too.

I bet it;s the latter but "findings shwo people have common bacteria on thier hands" doesn;t seemas catchy...

I suppose doctors washing their hands didn't stop lots of women dying post-childbirth from preventable infections? :p I get the point about strengthening the immune system but despite its name it does not fight off *all* pathogens.

I know its bad having poo matter about the place but if we carry on with this obbession of having to be spotless clean then will our immune systems start easing off? One day we will all get hit by some super bug we cannot fight off.
Case and point. Asthma is already on the rise.

I cringe every time I see anti-bacterial this and anti-bacterial that. The even have anti-bacterial toys and chopping boards now.

Not really, if it was a "new" super bug (by super i assume you mean abti biotic resistant so we're ****ed anyway) then we wouldn;t have an imunity regardless as it;s "new"

People are thinking about this way too much.

What about the money you handle, do you wash all your money because of germs?!
Do you open door handles with your feet?
What about all the lovely hygeine you get down your local pub, on the tables and such?
What about all the things that others handle in buffet restaurants to pick up the food?

People take these things way to seriously. We have an immune system for a reason, get over it.
