Fallout 4 hindered on AMD cards by Gameworks > FIX

well supposedly it does in this that was from the guide yesterday

since it makes next to no difference to the game imo i turned it off I'll take smooth steady frames over anything :)

Well that's what happens when you throw tessellation at a lighting effect. Godrays are a common effect and have been for years, but their interpretation of it tanks performance.

I can play crysis 3 near ultra at a steady 60fps on a single 7950, there is more revolutionary tech in a single brickwall from that engine than Fallout 4

I should be able to handle it fine without turning down any silly outdated lighting effects.
Crysis 3 = graphics-heavy linear FPS

vs

Fallout 4 = large, persistent open world freedom-based RPG built with modding in mind

So yea, they're both doing very different things. Quite silly to compare them in such a way.

Also, settings are different from game to game. Ultra in one game is not Ultra in another game. Graphics options are named so because they are *options*. There is no guarantee you're going to be able to use every single one maxed out on any given card, so yes, you're going to have to turn off or lower settings sometimes if you want your ideal performance level.

And there is nothing 'outdated' about the lighting here.

FO4 is not a graphics showcase by any means, but boy do people really not understand how this stuff works sometimes.

Gods Rays/Volumetric Lighting are also in Farcry 4 and that game runs fine with arguably much better visuals than fallout 4. They have not optimized this game or have over-tessellated the rays..

But that's a different engine isn't it? Who knows how these things work? Maybe the Fallout 4 engine is doing something that makes this effect more expensive?

As I recall, the developers using GameWorks are free to change the code and even submit improvements to Nvidia for inclusion into the library. So this suggests that Bethesda couldn't improve on Nvidia's implementation or they were perfectly happy with the performance hit associated with GameWorks effects.

It's not silly to compare at all though is it.
Yes, it is.

Were you going to make an argument or just make me answer the question?

The only problem with the god rays in Fallout 4 is that they let you crank it up to ridiculousness if you so desire. Turn it down to Low and it's fine.

Ignore the brand v brand battle and just consider the overall impact the effect is having.
It can be made to look just as good on ultra for a much smaller performance hit. It's like they take the setting Ultra and make it a lot more demanding than it needs to be just so it's "" Ultra.

Having said that it will be interesting to see how the performance hit on AMD cards compares to the performance hit on Nvidia cards.
But that is a different matter.

Except.... just like the witcher 3 over tessellated hair, it also kills FPS for nvidia users :p

I didn't have any problems with my 970 at 1200p.

That can be tweaks in the GFE as well.

But on a serious note, Nvidia should be using an open source library of effects which AMD (and anyone else) can contribute too.

But Nvidia are not to blame for taking the initiative and developing their own library. Game after game, top AAA title after top AAA title are using it, so their doing something right.

It's more like a way to push people into buying a 970 or 980ti. If you need a 970 just for 1080p then I guess anyone with a slower card will upgrade to play at ultra settings.

Guys if you lower those effects in the Menu it doesn't seem to completely disable them and still hinders performance, change them in the ini to a 0 value. It definitely feels these features were pushed by NV to cripple our cards!

Thanks. When I first heard of GameWorks being featured I instantly remembered The Witcher 3 case. I didn't bother with changing the tessellation levels in CCC back then 'cause I just disabled it in-game, but I'll make sure to do it this time round if this is the case.

From what I've played though, in general Fallout 4 seems to be a bit all over the place in terms of optimisation across all platforms anyway, but this should help :)

OK guys time for me to report !

I have the game set to Ultra @ 4k on a Fury X and as advised I lowered the "God Rays" to low. So far (and I'm three hours in) I have seen no issues whatsoever. I don't honestly know what the FPS are because I am not monitoring them but I have noticed absolutely no slowdown whatsoever, not even during a battle with seven Raiders and a Deathclaw.

I have disabled AA completely but the thing is this game looks like it could benefit from it, even at 4k. So I will try playing with that later.

As for the game? well sadly in parts it feels like I am playing Fallout 3 again. However, there are bits that are quite beautiful and the weather really adds to the dynamics.

But overall? I'm home again.... At long last....

Bugs : So far I have had one bug where a NPC got himself stuck in the ceiling. However, he did free himself eventually.

Other than that? it's been as good as gold.
