Fallout: New Vegas

just to point out from a quick glance the positive replies are coming from new members who signed up around fo3 or later.

It's the older fo1&2 members that's views are going to be important.

Well Jeff Gerstmann couldn't be bothered to try the hardcore mode in his review, so I guess we'll have to wait for the user opinions...

but no where near what fo1&2 where :(

Very different games.

I recently (read: Finally) got around to playing F2, I really enjoyed it, I still prefer fallout 3 though, however I can see why people prefer 2.

They are far and away different styles of games, saying fallout 2 is better than fallout 3 or the other way around is like saying Mario Galaxy is better than Left4Dead, you may prefer one but that doesn't make the other any less good.

As a side note I hate Mario Galaxy and want to beat it to death with sticks.

It's the older fo1&2 members that's views are going to be important.

Also can we drop this act? It's getting tired, the fallout games have changes, deal with it. No ones view is any less important than anyone else purely because they played such and such "back in the day", if someone thinks a game is good is comparison to another game they and many others thought was good, then that game is good, in the same way that if you think it's bad in comparison to another game, but still enjoy it, it's still a good game, you just prefer the other game.

This constant "F1/2 was better" in every bloody thread mentioning F3 is getting really, really dull. So you prefer F1/2, congratulations, you can form your own opinions, stop bleating about it like it's all that matters.

who cares? seriously why are so many people insisting to live in the past? especially when their 2 completely different games - fallout 3 was a quality game, epic experience.. so more of the same for me is good.

cant wait to get into it.

1 million percent agree, same is good, only difference I want is less bugs but it werent that bad really and the better mods as part of the retail release

I'm pre-ordering it tomorrow and this is the first game i'm genuinley excited about playing in months

Fallout 2 sold 50,000 copies in the UK if I recall correctly. Fallout 3, probably over a million by now. Publishers are run like businesses, they would leave the devs high and dry if the game didn't succeed commercially. Much as I sympathise with your viewpoint, that kind of game isn't workable in today's market...

What you're failing to mention is that Beth bought the Fallout license to make Fallout games. Yet what they produced was not Fallout in anything but name.

They could have created their own brand-new IP called "Post-apocalyptic Shooter With Orcs" and sold millions of copies.

When you buy an IP, you buy its history. Would there be any point buying the Quake IP and making an RTS about fairies and unicorns with it?

Beth wiped the slate clean with FO3 and abandoned 99% of everything that made FO1 and 2. What was the point in buying the IP again?

The point of buying it was because it was a very good game.

Think about it, what relation does the original Mario have to Mario Galaxy besides similar monster stars and jumping?

Things change, we move on.

Mario's IP was never sold was it.

Imagine Nintendo buying the Quake IP to make Super Strogg Galaxy. Instead of Mario you have Quake Marine; instead of Bowser and co you have the Strogg. Would that have made any sense?

That's what Beth did. They bought Fallout IP and make Oblivion With Guns. Again, it makes no sense. They could have made their own post-apoc IP.

And what you seem to misunderstand is that it doesn't matter. As far as I can tell what Bethesda did was take two ingredients, their own Elder Scrolls style of open world story driven gameplay and the Fallout Universe and make a fantastic game.

So your franchise bit the dust, get over it, it was never that successful in the first place.

Look I can fully understand that it may be annoying that a franchise you loved no longer exists but no amount of bitching and moaning is going to change that, move on and let everyone else enjoy the new Fallout's in peace.

What you also need to remember is that Bethesda are not Black Isle, expecting a completely different developer to just make the same game as the original dev makes no sense, developers buy franchises so they can do THEIR thing with it. They say "So we now own this franchise, this is what the original Dev did with it, we want to do THIS with it". You can't begrudge them for this, would be like begrudging a housing developer for turning a factory is a block of flats.

Every time a new star wars game comes out you could complain about how it's nowhere near as good as Dark Forces or Tie Fighter. It won't get you anywhere, and the people having fun playing all the new star wars games won't pay the slightest bit of notice to you.

People do. Too many gamers are stuck in the past.

Bit different there as no SW game with space combat has been released in the last 5 years, and Battlefront II was entirely multiplayer oriented.

The games market was a lot smaller years ago, remember?

FO1 was successful enough to lead to a sequel. FO2 was successful enough for there to have been a third project in the works - "Van Buren".

They were successful enough to still be selling in 2010, at GOG and in stores.

Successful enough to be on many gamers list of all-time classics.

Sadly, this day and age everyone wants dumbed down shooters, and that's what Beth deliver. Every product more dumbed down than the last, but prettier. Enjoy it.

Well that's bullocks because they use pretty much all the original sounds. Same perk names, skills, lore, vaults, enemies, music is in the same light. It's not as if Bethesda could use exactly the same thing as the first 2.

It may feel different but that is because it's in 3D and FPS, if it were isometric and 3D such as Torchlight, perhaps the vets would be singing a different tune.

I see Mark Morgan came back to do the music for NV (along with Inon Zur), will be interesting to see how it compares with his earlier work.
