Hmm, logged in via VPN fine, and can play the game - but get an error about vcredist_86 being incompatible, so it won't start

You don't have to pre-load it you can install off the DVD... just not until the game is officially released. It would have prompted you to do this assuming you ran the install on the DVD rather than just put the CD-Key into Steam.
It's a pretty retarded system where the consumer can't install from the DVD or even play the game until Valve give them permission. (yes I'm aware you can 'trick' it using a VPN but that's really not the point..)

I've started it now so I may as well let it finish. Just means I'll be without internet for the next 48hours
I'm slowly getting into it more but it doesn't make it easy, FO3 just seemed to have more character from the get go. Perhaps it's just the reuse of textures, objects, etc without any attempt to introduce something new (so far) and the whole thing feels like a cash-in.
I'm just not drawn into it at all so far but I'm going to keep trying if only because buying the game over here in NZ cost a small fortune.
I wouldn't say it's terrible but they are almost banking on you remembering how great FO3 was in order to keep you playing at the moment, it's hard to see how anyone new to the series would get what all of the fuss is about so far.
Fingers crossed though, I was pinning my hopes on this seeing my through until Black Ops!

Well I know where I won't be pre-ordering next time. Hut has still not despatched New Vegas pre-orders. When I tried to cancel my order, they quickly changed the status from Awaiting Stock Pick to Awaiting Despatch so that my cancel won't go through.
Been playing for a while now. The game automatically sets me up to Ultra settings and then it gets some terrible stuttering, there's some horrible performance issues with it that i never had with Fallout 3. I dropped the settings down and i had the same problem, so i had a read up on the official forums and there's a fix that helped me.

It basically makes the game think you have a 7900GS card installed, i made sure all settings were on Ultra again and it's runs great.
It has something to do with newer cards running in DX10 or DX11 and using a DX9 comparability mode for the Gamebryo engine which causes performance problems. By having an older dll file it just runs DX9.

Think there is a small bug to do with the game and the direct x versions - I think Neil79 posted a fix about two or three pages back...
