Farming Simulator 17

All the review videos that have been released (Sqirrel has 20% off link) none have shown the graphics settings. What I would like to know is if there is a view distance slider. In 15 there was a view distance mod script that could push it out further than the standard. I was using 400 which was pretty much the map. It gets rid of the texture circle around your vehicle as it loads in all the textures. Does anybody know if this have been incorporated in the new graphics settings?

Yes it's a bit silly that the DVD version (including the Collectors Edition) and the Giants digital keys can't be activated on Steam. It's about time they changed it.

Marketed to an older generation....

Sorry, but that is bull.

Show me a single piece of marketing which indicates this is sold to/primarily played by OAP's who are unable to use Steam?

Infact, such versions are inferior as they miss out on the implemented Steam features.

Pathetic publishing is what it is.

A lost day one sale from me, maybe even two. Was going to buy the collectors edition as a Christmas present for the nipper (not an OAP and can use Steam) but was only worthwhile if was a Steam key.

Will wait till Christmas sale, will be on some discount, even if small will be cheaper than pre-order/day 1 purchase.

You know you can buy through Steam and activate on Steam and it works like every other Steam game, right?

It's just orders placed directly with Giants which activate through Giants' own servers (and the DVD orders apparently). Giants have also made available a digital equivalent of the Collectors Edition after requests on their forums: Digital Collector’s Edition Upgrade Pack

The only negative to Steam orders is that they can't host a personal dedicated server - you need two licenses - one to host a server (which needs to be a Giants purchase) and one to play on it as a client, and that one can be a Steam client - though you can subscribe to a hosting platform such as Very Games which negates the need for a personal dedicated server license. It's a bit of a rubbish system in that regard, but it is what it is.

So you cannot host a server with the Steam version? That sounds silly.

Especially for likely the most popular distribution.

What a stupid way to fragment your community.

I am certain I was able to host with a Steam version on FS '15?

Nope, FS15 couldn't host via Steam either. You could start the server software and set it up, but when it came to starting the server itself it gave an error. There is apparently a valid reason for it, but I can't remember what it is. FS17 is apparently going to be the same.

Most servers will run on a 3rd party server anyway, negating the need for a second license and ensuring 24/7 up time.

I realise that most of us on OcUK are perfectly capable of operating a 24/7 server, and on a powerful but silent machine if needs be, but in the FS community the vast majority will be running on 3rd party server providers.

yeah, that is exactly it. I have a server running 24x7 with a few games and TS server for mates. I refuse to pay a GSP when I have a rig with CPU cycles and bandwidth to spare myself.

Seems harsh that they will not do anything to help Steam users though, just cough up for another licence :(

Not very good customer service.

This is a game that is generally used by older gamers.... Who said OAP's?

If you want to buy it on steam then do so, but that was not what you asked.

If you want a cheaper retail version here is 20% off pre order. (link in description)

As for pathetic publishing? They are not the only ones who do that... try entering a GTAV retail copy into steam........

Steam is not for everybody and why force it on people when you can buy it from steam in the first place if you so choose. The publisher has all the bases covered... so no not pathetic....

GTA uses RSS wherever it is purchased from. Consistent. Farm Sim uses different DRM, depending where/how was purchased. That is inconsistent.

Honest question - these games have a more limited audience than most - yet seem to have fairly good production values...

This does not compute.... Is there a bigger audience that we don't know about??

It doesn't just appeal to farming peeps in the same way that Euro/American Truck Sim doesn't just appeal to truckers.

I was trying to find sales figures beyond the console release last may (see my reply to Greebo in post 27), but I stumbled upon this discussion on Reddit and the second post sums it up well for me.

It's not farming in the sense that you get a shovel out to muck out the sheepdog's kennel and help a cow give birth to a calf (you can't do either), it's farming in that it's 99% a driving game and you can choose just how realistically you want to play it and what you want to do.

It is weird, but there seems to be a good demand for chilled games now. I used to be a racing sim nut (GP2, GP3, GP4, Grand Prix Legends, NASCAR Racing 2003 (moreso the GTP mod), iRacing, etc) but those relatively adrenaline fuelled days (I took it rather seriously) are few and far between now and I'm quite happy firing up farm sim, joining a server and just having a laugh.

It's incredibly popular considering what's a really bland sell on the surface, but to give you an idea of how big it is I think I read that their budget has been doubling from 2008/2009 (the initial games) with each release (every two years), and when you consider just how many big brands they have licensed in FS17 (scroll down) you can probably imagine the numbers must be pretty damn big.

I'm looking at the Daggerwin videos and so far it's looking pretty good. Will be interested in getting this when it comes out. Might even pre-order for the extra 2 tractors.

Just saw an ad for this at Half time in the Liverpool game on BT... you'd be forgiven for thinking it was AAA title.

Nate

I remember first seeing the older games in this series some years ago, and thinking "how sad / dull etc.." and now it has a massive following. I have absolutely no idea where from, and I stumbled into it just by seeing a youtube video in my "suggested videos".

Heres to hoping the new one can still have the bank balance modded in the same way if you just want to play it as arcade.

There's already a money mod for the PC version.

Alternatively the .xml files for the save games are still in plain text if you'd prefer to manually edit it.
