Favourite RPG game of all time?

theres all different types of "rpg".... but lets see..

Best First Person - Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines, Runner up - Deus Ex

Best 3rd Person - The Witcher

Best Party Based RPG - Planescape Torment - Runner up Baldurs Gate 2, KOTOR

Best Free roaming type - Morrowind, Gothic 2

Best RPG "Lite" - Final Fantasy VII

For me it has to be Baldur's Gate 2. As much as I enjoy Bioware's 3D games, none have managed to capture the character, atmosphere, depth and charm of that game.

Honourable mentions would go to Planescape Torment, Mass Effect and Fallout 1/2.

And for the old school nostalgia vote, Dungeon Master will always have a fond place in my heart as I spent many an hour as a kid crawling through the dungeon!

Well, I thought no one would notice ;) , since I only re-play those now on emulators, so I get confused myself.
Not sure why I added those though, my favourite Final Fantasy was actually 6.

You forget that there are a couple of hardcore FF fans on here :p I think I own a good 6 copies of FFIV (2 SF, 1 SF Easytype, DS, GBA, PS1) and 4 copies of FFVI(2SF, GBA, PS1 - Not yet got the US SNES version :().

edit - 7 copies of FFIV. I also own a GBA pirate copy that I bought off ebay (advertised as legit :()

Ys1&2 on PCE-CDROM
Secret of Mana
FF 7, 10, 12
Zelda <various>

and funnily enough WoW if that counts... thankfully I have managed to escape it's clutches by just keeping the PS3 now :D

Xenogears is the greatest RPG ever made. Not many people in the UK have played it because it was never released here, however the game never got the attention or recognition that FFVII got, probably because of it not being released worldwide and the trouble it caused based on the issues it deals with

The scale of the game and the themes it touched on was absolutely immense. I've never even read a fiction book that goes as deep and as far as the Xenogears storyline did.

1. Xenogears
2. FFVII
3. Shadow Hearts 1
4. Suikoden III
5. Toss up between; BoF 3, Shadow hearts 2, BoF4, Suikoden II, FFVI, FFVIII

Edit: Forgot this was in Consoles. Favourite console RPG was FFX. I've never played any of its predecessors.

Doesn't matter that it's in consoles, all the ones I've mentioned were on the PC :p

If it was a console only RPG I'd have to go for Fallout 3.

Favourite is probably Skies of Arcadia, second place is probably a tie between Alundra and the Breath of Fire games :)

I wouldn't really call Shenmue an RPG, it's more an adventure/action game than anything.

Yes but youre still playing the role of a person and learn new skills along the way, interact with people, determine the outcome of situations by choosing your own dialogue etc.

FFVII - my first ever JRPG and the reason I also bought my second PS1 after a friend showed me a video of it on a Playstation mag coverdisc.

Shenmue was a bit of everything, Adventure, Action, Fighting, RPG, etc so really it's a bit of either genre, even though Yu Suzuki tried to coin it as his own, FREE.

With all the detail, interactivity and of course the story in that game, it IS an RPG, just never really labelled as one.

final fantasy and turn based combat = :/

Hitting things with swords but not actually hitting them because the game says so = :/

Has to be a toss up between Final Fantasy 7 and Deus Ex for me I think.

Should try Fallout 3 at some point, technically it should be my cuppa but from what I've seen, I'm not so sure.
