Favourite RPG game of all time?

Sounds interesting whats the best to get the GOTY version?

Jog on

Yeah, GOTY edition includes the expansion which is brilliant :)

hehe, I would never have used Mass Effect to explain Oblivion or Fallout 3 :p

Fallout 3 and Oblivion = similar, Only Oblivion is closer to something like Lord of the Rings, with Magic, Swords and Arrows.

And Fallout 3 is a 1950's alternative end to the World War. With Radiations and mutation, and swearing, and old 1950s music. You get guns, Grenades, Melee weapons. You get Perks as you level up too

It Can be played in 3rd person, But so obviously designed to be played 1st person.

Why not? You level, find new items, get loads of quests and, most of the time, you fight monsters to get to your objective in both Mass Effect and Oblivion. Only major difference I see between Oblivion and Mass Effect is: Oblivion is completley free-roaming (Mass Effect doesn't have as much free-roaming) and Oblivion has swords and shields instead of laser guns and high-tech armour.

Personally I can't really comment much on Fallout 3 as I have not played it. However, I know a few people who have and they compare it to Oblivion, just set in a different time.

Indeed, loved mass effect, hated oblivion and fallout 3, the games are worlds apart

I don't see why, I'm guessing you didn't get along with the gameplay? I've played through Oblivion, and am currently playing Mass Effect. If you enjoy getting quests, levelling up, getting new items and generally progressing your character then I reckon you'd enjoy Oblivion.

I loved Oblivion, absolutely awesome game but for some reason just couldn't get into Fallout 3. Mass Effect is superb but I didn't find it as fun as I first found Oblivion, seriously put hundreds of hours into Oblivion.

The gameplay was fine, my problem was that the plot seemed like an after thought, it took a back stage to the side quests that were available. Now that isn't an insult to the game by any means, the amount of optional content in oblivion was frankly overwhelming, outdoing most games main plot lines, but therein lay the problem. I like my games to be storyline driven with side quests coming as just that, side quests. With oblivion i just felt like the storyline was a chore and the point of the game was actually the optional content, the stuff you could do instead of playing through the story.

I'm very much a story comes first gamer, i love to watch character development and see a deep and complex plot unfold. Oblivion lacked all of those features but instead replaced it with a world with a million things to do, but none of them REALLY mattered. If Oblivion had a good storyline quest combined with the standard setting side quests it already had it would have possibly been one of the greatest RPGs ever made, as it stands it's just average (for me).

Also there's other iffy things like enemies that level up as you do, randomly generated caves/dungeons and many other issues. But then, for a game that ambitious i am totally willing to overlook them as they did set the standard in many ways, it's just unfortunate that none of those standards appealed to me.

hmm, Partly 1st person vs 3rd. The Oblivion\Fallout 3 Third person view is just a tagged on after thought. Where as Mass Effect is true 3rd person.

But its more than that, To me its like comparing I dunno, A basketball video game to a Football video game.

Both have a goal, both have 2 teams, Both involve attack and defense with a Ball. But they arent the same sort of game....If that makes sense :p

IMO they are both exactly the same sort of game, just set in different times, I kind of see where you're coming from, but the only difference I really see is the fact that Mass Effect is more story driven (some people describe it as an interactive movie, which isn't a bad thing) and Oblivion is more quest driven.

Oblivion is made for 1st person view. By default the 3rd person view is a bit crap - no crosshair and the controls aren't too good. You can make it better with some mods, but you'll never get the 3rd person view in Oblivion as good as the one in Mass Effect.

Fair enough I guess. Oblivion is more of a quest driven game, you kind of play each story at a time (e.g. save someone from an evil monster then move on and become a leader in a guild etc.). Personally I left the main storyline/quest until last. Some of the quests could almost be seen as a separate storyline.

You should give Oblivion and Fallout 3 a go if you enjoyed Mass Effect. I'm currently playing through Mass Effect and the game play is quite similar to Oblivion, apart from the fact that Oblivion doesn't have guns etc. :p

Mass Effect and Oblivion are nothing alike IMO, except for the fact they're western RPGs. One is third person, the other is 1st. One is completely free-roaming, the other slightly more linear. One is party based, the other is for a single hero. Their only real similarities are the ones they share with most other RPGs (big worlds, lots of side quests, NPC interaction, etc). You can't use those generic similarities to say they're similar types of RPGs as they really aren't.

Fallout 3 is similar as well, set in the 50s I guess. I think Fallout 3 is more free roaming compared to Mass Effect and it has guns.

Set in the 50's? Fallout 3 is set in 2277 :p If you like Oblivion you really owe it to yourself to play Fallout 3, it's better than both Oblivion and Mass Effect IMHO.

I thought Fallout was 50s judging from the style in the gameplay videos... I've not played it though :)

I still see Mass Effect and Oblivion as similar types of games regardless of those differences mentioned above. You'd have to judge for yourself though.

I have judged for myself, I've been through both of them fully so I feel very confident in saying they're very different type of roleplaying games. :) If you want to talk about similar role playing games, Fallout 3 and Oblivion are the ones that share huge similarities.

I feel confident in disagreeing

There are so many RPG's I love, uts so difficult to choose, but just a few examples here:

TES: Oblivion (PC)
Shining Force 3 (Saturn)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
Sword of vermilion (Megadrive)
Any Zelda games (Nin)

Baldur's Gate - the best RPG I've ever played, can't wait for Dragon Age Origins.
Final Fantasy 7
Suikoden
Secret of Mana

Fallout has the same game engine as oblivion, it's exactly the same format. Get it if you like Oblivion.
Yeah but its not the same. Its guns and bombs and has no guilds, just random scattered quests.

As you can guess I wasn't a big fan :p I've probably spent over 150 hours on Oblivion though!
