Feek's macOS useful tools, utilities and applications thread

Such as? genuinely interested.
...built in Archive Utility couldn’t open.
Niche but the CAB and APK formats are two that spring to mind. But also Archive Utility lacks a lot of formats for compression outside of Zip, CPIO/CPGZ or AAR without dipping into terminal.

Archive Utility/Finder is good for the basics but something like Keka supports a lot more formats. As always, each to their own.

Warp is by far the best terminal app I have tried and it has just added really useful AI features as well.

Urgh, not more recommendations for this atrocity of a terminal. Although looking at the website at least they've listened to some of the feedback, but trust once broken is difficult to regain in my opinion.

I haven't heard any complaints. I'll see what they are about. I've been using it for over a year now though (free plan) and haven't had any issues.

Is there any reason I should stop using it?

Edit: OK did some reading and see what you mean although I never needed to login to use it. I'll switch back to iTerm2 for the time being.

I started using overcast from a suggestion on here when having issues with the apple podcast app, overcast is being a disaster for me since the update, frequently forgetting the last position on podcasts and starting from the beginning. Anyone else had that issue? Any others worth trying before I go back to apples podcast app?

Only just saw this, but no, I've not had that problem. I did have a few grumbles with the recent big update but they're all sorted now.

Thanks for this thread. I just got a Mac Mini and it's sick other than OSX doing things that make zero sense.

I still need to get an app that applies folder behaviour across the OS and an app that doesn't create a new folder or tab when you open a folder.

I just want to dive down into each folder one by one and not have 5 folders on my desktop that the OS vomited up.

You can do that double clicking opens into same window not a new window. Find the settings

Right.

That’s fine but where is the setting? I looked and couldn’t find it in the usual location (folder or system settings)

I found the tab option for opening a folder fine.

Find the settings
Also, what'a bizarre thing to say.

I'm sure there's a setting for it. There should obviously be a setting for it but since I'm new to OSX, it's a learning curve and different to what I'm used to coming from Windows/Linux/literally every other OS I've ever used ever.

If Apple had a helper that would allow you to intuitively choose the behaviour in a neat and tidy group settings box, I'd not have this issue.

As it stands, some settings are spread around and make finding the correct one really difficult and intuitive.

The fact that there are so many apps out there to help fix OSX and make it easier to use is just a sign as to how far Apple have their head up their own £"$% when it comes to some things.

Don't get me wrong, I like my iPhone and I like the Mac Mini as a whole but neither are perfect.

BTW, I find Finder pretty poor. It's nowhere near as good as Windows Explorer. A lot of folk use Pathfinder as an alternate, that might be worth a look. It's paid for, but they do a trial. As an example I like to use the Column view, but you can't make that view default everywhere. You have to do it on a folder by folder basis. Which is dumb.

Sorry i couldn’t provide the exact how-to for you due to me being on iphone and miles away from my own mac os computer. If you like ill put your details in my notes, when i get back i will do a google search and then verify that on my system and then update the thread with my results just for you. Cheers.

I've been using Pathfinder for just over a year, and love it. It isn't perfect by all means but it seems to be the best out of the file managers that suit me. Forklift was nice but I didn't like the price I think. Forgotten what issues I had with it!

Ever since I started using OSX during the Leopard day, I've found Finder useless. I've always struggled using it with networked drives.

What am I missing?

you're missing the fact that it doesn't behave like any other OS out there, finding that setting isn't intuitive and if it gave me a welcome screen and asked me what behaviour I wanted, it wouldn't be an issue.

I'm not saying that the option doesn't exist, it's an OS, I'm sure it's capable of doing anything Apple want it to do, I'm saying that it's unintuitive and hard to use coming from a Windows/Linux environment.

I'm sure you know all the OSX tricks and settings. I don't. I've never used OSX before and when I looked for that setting, I couldn't find it in any of the normal places you'd expect that setting to be in the menu options.
