FIFA World Cup 2014 - GROUP D [Uruguay, Costa Rica, England, Italy - 14/19/20/24 June] **spoilers**

Streams can often be pretty shoddy/not good enough to enjoy, and if you don't have a way to get them on your TV all those things combined make it something I can't be bothered with (sometimes I'd try and get 3pm kick offs or BT Sport games through streams, but I'd almost always give up).

And watching games on MOTD is a different world to watching entire games, imo.

If its a case of watching in a lower resolution or not watching, I'll watch in lower resolution. It's not ideal but still doesn't take anything away from the excitement of the game.

Yes shocking indeed. Let's have a look in more detail at these goals.

Teams he scored against:

Westbrom
Westham
Norwich
Palace
Stoke
Fulham
Cardiff
Spuds
Villa
City

So out of them city are the only ones I would consider national team material. Yeah so it is truly shocking he is there :p

So even in his true position he can only score against the lower end teams. One goal against city does say much other than he turns on his true ability from time to time.

He should be a sub and bring on for last 20minutes in his proper position not put him out of position in favour of someone who plays that position.

.

Again that means nothing who he scored them against, every one else had the same chances to score against the same teams twice per season. Yet they didn't, all except sturridge who scored 4 more than him. By no means am I saying he should play in sturridge position, he earnt that place and is the form player. I wouldn't though then play Rooney as a left winger anymore than I would have scholes then complained he was past it.

Gareth Barry would do a better job on the left wing. ;) It's a good thing Walcott got injured or that pile of turd would have been playing instead of sterling.

We've got to change something for Uruguay no doubt. Gus Poyet mentioned playing two up front, he's right. We've got to go back to a 442 diamond basically. either 442 diamond or 4312 or 442 or something..

Rooney and Sturridge are our best finishers, we need them around the box.

something like this..

or wilshere in for milner..

If we don't win v Uruguay..i'll be gutted. As if the tournament would be over for us :p noooo!

We've got to change something for Uruguay no doubt.

Why? It wasn't awful last night, we created more shots on target than they did and a bit more composure from Rooney could have seen us get a draw. Furthermore, Italy barely got anywhere near our goal after they took the lead.

Why would Roy change a system he's had in place for ages because we narrowly lost to a better team, when we're up against a lesser team next?

I'd hope he keep the system as it is, but maybe shift around a few players to give our left flank a bit more cover. There's so much drama, doom and gloom on here because we narrowly lost to a better team who we've not beaten in 40 years! We've got two winnable games coming up now and can develop a head of steam before getting in to the second round.

Italy could have kept going i feel, when Italy scored the second goal they just shut up shop and gave England no space. England were shot after 70 minutes and couldn't run any more.

Italy played to the conditions England went out all guns blazing and still couldn't get the second goal. Italy played a very controlling game without needing to really go 100%.

Big difference in quality between the 2 teams, Italy played a very good game.

England can still qualify though but it's going to be hard as Uruguay know they must win or they are most likely out even with a draw.

Change something as in move Rooney up front basically. He's not a left winger, he can do a job well there but he needs to be up top with Sturridge. I just think we need to shift round a few of the attacking players so we have a bit more penetration. I think the squad altogether is quite an attacking squad so in general we will concede probably, but we need to be more deadly in the final 3rd if we want to go further.

We need to sacrifice Rooney. We can't change our shape to suit him, he's not good enough.

Just drop him and use him as backup to Sturridge.

I suspect Roy will bottle it and keep Rooney in the team just on the off chance he will actually not be ****, but he will be. Rooney just does not perform at this level, he is a liability and past his "best".

Someone on the radio this morning was saying we should switch to 4-4-2 and put Rooney up top with Sturridge. We would get torn a new one in midfield if we did that, and Rooney has shown that he's not right for out on the left, and Sterling made the 'in-the-hole' position his own against Italy. It wouldn't be possible to drop him now.

Drop Rooney, keep the shape (which I think worked well and fashioned a lot of chances early on that, if we had taken, might have seen a very different result) and play Lallana-Sterling-Welbeck in front of Gerrard and Henderson.

It seems that Hodgson is poking the bear there, England have to hope that he is not fully fit or he could win the game single handedly.

Yeah, I might have kept quiet until after the Uruguay game ion his shoes!

Not good enough at this level? A level lower than CL football and the top 4 in the premiership? Yet Rooney still provided more chances than the other forwards and created an assist. As Baz has already said, why wouldn't you just play the Liverpool players with Rooney operating in Suarez's role.

Why wouldn't you play Sterling in the role he operated most for Liverpool? We need to change our shape not because of Rooney but because it was a crap system anyway. Rooney still is the best forward we have, Sturridge scored more in the league this year but Rooney was in a much poorer side. Either way they are the two best forwards we have. Sterling played well and frightened players but beating 3 players and creating nothing is what we had from previous pacey youngsters. He's full of potential but created little.

The whole rooney thing is over blown because of how easy it is to hate on him. If he's forced to play on the left, he should do what scholes did, retire from international football and wait for you all to cry when your left will players no where near as good. Interesting that scholes changed his tune about rooney and how he should be played in his best position behind Sturridge. Shearer too now he's calmed down and probably been shown how many chances he fluffed on the big stage ;)

It's not the level of quality Rooney struggles with, but the expectation. He can't handle the weight of pressure (not all his fault).

What would you play then? How do you fit Rooney in a shape that worked really well for 70 mins against Italy? Or do you change everything and adapt the team to suit Rooney?

The best we have is:

Gerrard-Henderson
Welbeck-Sterling-Lallana
Sturridge

Rooney would be good to be an impact sub IMO. Annoy him by dropping him and let him off the leash at 65mins plus.

It didn't work really well. Rooney created 3 chances and 1 assist. Sturridge and Sterling created one chance each, wellbeck nothing. Hardly anything to write home about, the end product was still **** from them all. I understand we get excited in this country when we get to see players run at the opposition but Sterlings performance was no different to when people got wet when Lennon, Walcott and others ran fast with the ball beat players and then created nothing. I think sterlings performance has been over blown. It's not like he was feeding Sturridge with chances or anyone.

This guy at work thinks they should play this team, The guy came 15th in the country for fantasy football. I can't disagree with him although i would drop Rooney, he said that the benefit too rooney is that opposing teams think he is good.

4-2-4 its more like a 4-3-3 but with a Rooney playing behind sturridge in the center.

upfront:
Welbeck, Left
Sturridge, center
Sterling, Right

midfield
Rooney center, more forward based
Henderson center, more central
Gerrard, center, more defensive midfield

Backs
Shaw, left back
Cahill, left center
Jagielkam right center
Milne, right back

What do you think?

I thought Milner looked pretty awful at RB in the friendlies. I'd stick to the same starting line up as against the Italians, but switch Rooney to play the no. 10 role, and have Sterling out wide. If you look on the BBC at the touches Sterling had during the gama,e they're almost completely limited to wide positions.

is rooney a out and out england striker ? = no.

name how many times he has dominated in England matches .

then think back to other great England strikers who did work for England , then you see rooney just isnt right for the national team.

hes a good footballer but he doesn't do what hes supposed to. hes had enough chances and positions is bs another excuse. look at any world class footballer the true greats make the movements themselves adapt win the games.

rooney doesnt.

id keep the team as it was and drop rooney.
