FIFA World Cup 2018 - Round of 16 [30th June, 1/2/3 July] **spoilers**

What a night. I couldn't believe how thuggish those Colombians were and so blatant, even in front of the ref!

To concede a goal so late in the game, just absolute torture. And then the dreaded penalties - I felt like a wee lad again, watching England go out to W.Germany at Italia'90.

Still can't believe we got through, it hasn't totally sunk in yet, such was the roller coaster of emotion last night. Even the Mrs was cheering and she's Scottish! :D

Bring on Saturday, whatever comes.

ps I think Sterling should sit this one out.

While it would be nice for it to come home, I think reaching the QF is a decent achievement. Won't be too gutted if we lose, but we can surely give Sweden a game.

The team hopefully learnt a lot from last night, so it's probably not the worst thing for them to concede a late goal and get to penalties.

There is no way that Colombian team deserved to be in the World Cup, absolutely pathetic. Referee didn't really help himself, should have asserted his authority a bit more with yellows for dissent earlier on.

No game is going to be easy in the knockout stages, but England should have the quality to beat Sweden. Colombia to me was going to be the hardest test, unless the good Croatia show up.

Absolute torture watching that last night, but a glorious result. To all the downers about England's performances, have a word with yourselves. No team except France in this whole world cup has looked any better than we have on the whole, and we are a young team growing in confidence. Stop being such downers and just enjoy the fact that we are progressing, that's what tournament football is about.

They missed James really, probably would have picked us apart in the end if they had his creativity.

As for England, something has to change really, Alli and Lingard were poor and were not making the runs they normally do beyond Kane (other than the first ten minutes) - I think Rashford needs to start now instead of Sterling as he has been given enough opportunity and not really excelling. Everyone else doing what they should be and/or exceeding expectations.

Personally I think Sterling has done more than Alli so far, Alli just doesn't look fit, maybe it was the early injury against Tunisia. If he's saying he is fit, then he is far from performing well enough.

wut? that comment about France? Are you for real? England scraped a win against Tunisia, had an easy time against Panama (with 2 penalties I think?) Lost to Belgium and then scraped through against Colombia.
I know what you mean, progressing is progressing but they have not been looking great by any stretch. Most of their goals have been penalties

At the end of the day England are ranked 12th in the world.

So have zero reason to be in final 8 in the world cup EVER.

really don't get the expectation that we deserve to be there
That post doesn't make sense.
How would any team/sports person improve their ranking if they were only allowed to go as far as their 'current ranking' ?!

I'm not sure how I feel about Sterling moving forward - I think I'd prefer to see Rashford up there with Kane instead.

Yet Germany couldn't even go through. Spain flopped too. the list goes on.

End of the day we are still in the competition because we did better then the likes of Germany etc who all at home now.

You cant even give credit to england at all.

Think we need to get Rashford on for Sterling and Loftus-Cheek on for Alli next game and should be good to go.
Though Walker and Young may not be fit for Saturday either thinking about it...

We need some goals from open play, this will bring confidence as well. We can’t rely on penalties.

Tell me another team who have looked better than England? Even France only scraped past Australia, beat Peru by just one and drew with Denmark. Fine call Denmark a dead rubber but so was ours against Belgium effectively. I fully admit France looked better against Argentina than anyone else all tournament, so I said APART from France. Tell me a better team.

A lot of people in this thread need to get a grip.

Some weird mentality where nothing England does can be good.

The team is young and inexperieneced. The expectation from the beginning was that they play as well as they can and make the most of the opportunity to develop. They’ve exceeded that expectation and have already done enough that we should be proud of them. If they go out in the next round we should all still be happy with how they’ve done. To come through last nights game as victors proved their determination and composure in a game that must have been ******* awful to play in....that’s commendable and the most valuable experience we could ask for.

These lads have got a long way to go but they’re definitely on the right road for once. Can we not just celebrate that the approach is right?

Some people think any team who doesn’t play like 2012 Germany is ****. Grow up and stop pushing your bitter agendas, trying to interrupt everyone else’s happiness. It’s pathetic.
Yep.

Bottom line is England won a penalty shoot out. If that's not cause for celebration then I don't know what is! :D

Last night was more a show of character and spirit than anything else. I say good job and well done. Anything further from this point is a bonus.

Going to penalties should actually stand us in good stead, if we come across them again we will go into it with confidence, no more burden of 'England PS voodoo' etc. If we had simply won 1 - 0 we'd obviously be buzzing, but to win in that fashion will surely give us an extra spring in our step.

Southgate needs to realise that playing Sterling in that position isn't working, he worked hard and had one of his better games of the tournament (which isn't saying much) but Rashford would surely be more effective. I'd give him a run out in the next game, or play Dele up there and bring in RLC/someone else.

We would have been knocked out last night if teams weren't so scared of us at set pieces and giving away silly penalties. We created about 2 chances from open play in 2 hours of football, the Kane header onto the roof of the net and Rose putting it wide late on, our only other chances were from set pieces. We were like a poor mans Spain without the passing/possession ability.

The only good thing about last night is that we're still in the tournament but we're going to need to improve a lot.
