Explain what - its an off the cuff story with very little context.

Strange how various professional MMA fighters aren't all bending over backwards to learn tai chi given that it is apparently one of teh deadliest martial arts going. Actually not that strange really as its mostly bullshido....

Way to miss the point.

What about the MMA fighters who have studied martial arts, I'm guessing you think that they didn't benefit from that at all?

Aikido can be quite aggressive and attacking. It just doesn't "look" as impressive as Karate or Taekwondo is all. Too many people basing their opinions on a few classes from substandard instructors at the local leisure centre and watching too many Van Damme Movies. (do you know how many of his moves are actually dance moves!).

I'd say it looks more impressive - throwing ukes around the room looks far more impressive than punching the air while pacing up and down a room in karate.

FWIW I'm not particularly keen on karate or TKD rather I'm simply a skeptic who's basing his opinions on evidence - people can believe what they want to believe in - some people are into homeopathy others are into Chinese medicine - I'm sure that some people can tell stories about how their friend was helped by xyz alternative therapy or perhpas believe that they themselves have been helped by it etc...

I'd rather not get into the whole mysticism/false traditions etc.. and just stick to the simple reality of evidence - judo shares roots with aikido however judo is used in competition, the techniques are put to the test against real opponents this is the key difference. Aikido involves role play - it lacks aliveness, it isn't tested....

erm I'd say that most MMA fighters have studied martial arts - it would be rather silly to enter a mixed martial arts competition without having studied any

Are you for real?

lol

Pretty much, you put any kid with a modicum of martial arts training in a ring with a "street fighter" he is going to get his arse kicked all over the place.

There is more to fighting that a specific style or art. Some of the hardest fighters I know have no martial arts training at all.

Karate and Jiu Jitsu have competitions too you know.

I will let others argue with you now as you've started to related martial arts to a belief.

MMA is a sport not an art. MMA fighters are there for spectacle, nothing more.

Comparing cage fighters with Tai Chi masters......you have no idea what you are talking about frankly.

Put a kid who is trained in martial arts into a ring with someone who isn't a street fighter or has minimal fighting experience and the marital artist will more than likely win.

While there are some wimps that train, the majority will be able to fight better than the people who are gifted with the ability to fight.

Judo involves role play too, that's what lessons are about. They don't compete all the time. And matches aren't exactly fights, they test - wait for it - the role play. Aikido has something similar in randori (youtube it), it's just never a competition.

Dowie, I'm just not sure what evidence you want. If it's, "local Aikido expert defeats crowd of ninjas", you're not going to find it. Aikido doesn't work like that.

Karate and Jiu Jitsu have competitions too you know.

Well the main ju jitsu body in the UK has a modified form of judo at its nationals and strangely enough anyone with some BJJ training tends to wipe the floor with them.

As for karate that depends on the style - but it is mostly light sparring - flicking someone on the side of their head with the top side of your foot might well score you 3 points in a karate competition but it would be a rather silly thing to do outside a dojo - or indeed in a competition against a fully resisting opponent with less restrictions on what you can/can't do.

Strangely enough regardless of their background a large % of MMA fighters will end up striking in a style that resembles muay thai - simply because when you strip away most of the rules that is what ends up being more effective - powerful kicks not flicks and the punches mostly start to resemble western boxing - not some horse stance karate style of punching.

I think you haven't got a clue tbh... eastern mysticism vs actual techniques practiced against resisting opponents.....

But carry on believing that the chi energy pyjama ninjas studying aikid, tai chi etc.. are teh deadly if you like

I'll leave you with this:

Jean-Claude Van Damme had a heart attack last year, so SS is the winner for me

Googled this but only found twitchfilm reporting this, and other newspapers using twitchfilm as a reference for said news.

Is there somewhere that confirms this?

I don't know or care what experience you have.

What an ego.

All bow and accept Castiel's opinion as fact.

Two words: karate kyokushin.

I wouldn't call those light flicks to the head sir.

I've seen people get knocked out and have broken noses in Karate competitions, but I guess that is irrelevant.

I'm not disputing what MMA fighter do, just the fact that you seem to have experienced some poor martial arts and seem to have based your opinions on that.

Isn't Machida a Karate black belt? Sure he's adapted to suit MMA but I bet that Karate background helps him a little bit.

Tbh JCVD had one move, that flashy jumping spin kick. These rarely are used it fighting as they leave you very exposed for a counter thus its a "Holywood move". Seagal is a 7th dan black belt Master in Akido and Van Damme is just a black belt in Karate.. not anyone can be a Master.
