Films that made you sit back and say 'what the hell was that all about ?'

Agree with donnie darko, i don't even think the creator gets it himself.

I thought unbreakable the film was terrible. No Point.

Then again i hate Kill Bill, sent me to sleep.

the whole point of donnie dark is that you should make the most of your life. It points out to possible realities, one in which he dies in a plane crash and the other one in which he makes a massive difference to reality. Such as finding out that patrick swayzes character is a peodphile. The only thing that got me about the film is that usually a something like this is shown though the eyes of someone else, but in darko it is shown protreid as though he is alive which makes the whole film pointless cause if he is dead then parts of the film cannot exist? Got me thinking about this film again I'll have to watch it again.

I dont know if Akira the movie came first (i doubt it) but the Manga actually makes sense.

akiras quite easy to understand, though the manga misses out a lot of the story from the comic though, which is probally for the best cause it would have been a full days worth.

manga has spawned some very strange and outlandish sort of ideas, but I don't think you can ever ask what the hell it was all about. Even the great fist of the north star never had me asking that question. I think I was more eger to go out and find a teacher to learn what ever martial art ken actually used..

Thats not what its about at its core, Its based on the book mentioned in the film, which (*strains memory*) suggests that time can get messed up, e.g. the jet engine dropping from a plane that wasn't even flying at the time, and that when that happens someone is empowered in various ways to resolve the paradox. Donnie has the ability to control elements, like the water in the school basement, and the fire in the peodophile's house; my memory is too sketchy as to the explanation of the rest, I'm sure its out there on the 'net somewhere though.

the films mentioned in this thread so far..

donny darko, although gripping, its crap imo
sin city, awesome film, don't know what there is not not understand.. ?
nightwatch, understand it at the end, there better be some sequels tho!
akira, lush manga had to watch it a few times until i got it (was 12 at the time!)

Eraserhead..........

I was just sat there wondering what the hell was going on in front of me......

When you think about it after, it kind of makes a bit of sense, but it's still weird.

It made sense?

Can someone please explain the 'meaning' of that film to me?

Some films that leave you thinking 'what the hell' are just bad films, others are supposed to have that effect. I think Donnie Darko and Mullholland Drive spring to mind for the latter. I went to see Hidden (Caché) the other night, it's a superb superb film, please go and see it. I can't remember the last time I saw that many people turn to each other and immediately start discussing 'what happened there then', 'what the...', 'but I thought...' before they had even left their seats.

I don't think I'll ever 'get' Akira really. I prefer to think of it as one big metaphor for war, and it kind of makes sense from then on.

I watched Lost Highway once with my friend, but we were both half asleep, and I can't remember much of the film, but what I do remember made very little sense. Lynch seems to be a master of the confusing story.

Yeah the film was some years after the Manga I believe. Might be tempted to read it myself if that's the case.

I thought Ghost Dog was pretty straighforward.

Or did you just mean that you it wasn't really anything like you expected?

Twelve Monkeys - I was going through a bad spell at the time I watched it and I want to watch it again but it didnt really seem to make an awful lot of sense to me.
Twelve Monkeys is sort of deliberately confusing, in that it's supposed to keep you guessing as to whether what happened to Bruce Willis' character was real or just him going mad, to parallel how his character changes through the film. It's well worth a rewatch though, but it is one you need to be fairly attentive to, especially in some parts.

mullholland drive was unusual,
as well as that film where the teacher gets killed by all the black hardcore american high school students, and his brother who is a police officer comes back to avenge his death. It goes from teaching in a class one minute, to the janitor (who has heavy artillery in the school basement) appearing through walls, and a general bloodbath the next minute, i was like how did that film go to such extremes in a matter of minutes - such a bad film

Dark City. I was extremely tired at the time and I really didn't have a clue what the hell was going on.

Same idea as the Matrix and Thirteenth floor, that we are living with a curtain over our eyes and that this world isn't the real world.

Not confusing, per se - But it did leave me going, as per the thread title - what was that all about.

I would hate to credit it with the kudos of being a confusing film.
