I have to filter every day either on my bike or motorbike in London, you just get used to it as a flow around things. Everyone does it on two wheels including police and ambulance bikes.

I would say that filtering should be no more than 10mph above the traffic flow speed. Other than that I have no issue, I would do the same on my bike.

edit: as for the guy opening the door, well done for keeping your temper in check.

I once went on a 45 min observation ride at a bikesafe event, and got chatting with some of the police who were doing the observations. The subject of filtering came up, and they mentioned that the guidelines they work to / teach other is based on a 20/20 rule: Don't filter at a speed more than 20mph faster than the traffic, and don't filter when the traffic is going faster than 20mph. So in theory, the 'fastest' they'd recommend filtering (should conditions allow) would be 40mph between traffic going at 20mph.

Seemed reasonable at the time, wondering if anyone else has heard that.
