FF6 > FF7. better charatcers (by far - FF7 pioneered the annoying angst ridden hero/antagonist), better story, and a whole lot more epic.
Of course. All baddies should be psychotic clowns.

"LEAVE FFVII ALONE"
Be a shame if this thread degenerated into VII trolling and 'VI > VII' or whatever. It's rapidly heading that way now. This thread is about VII. Got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

"LEAVE FFVII ALONE"
Best game ever! Shame the movie wasn't on par with the game.

I thought the movie was decent enough (assuming you are talking about Advent Children), the other movie wasn't very good apart from the animation/graphics
Game stories are always poor, even the "good" story driven ones. I use to love RPG's but when you look at them from a distant there is nothing to them. B-movie story+basic combat controls+5 minute spell animation= top of the line RPG. If FPS had moved at the same rate as RPG's then we would still be limited to aiming horizontally but with bigger weapons and explosions.
Square's other less successful series of the '90s was probably a much more forward thinking game- Secret of Mana. Multiplayer RPG with melee, healer, caster- sounds very similar to a popular MMORPG.
SPOILERS....
Most of the characters coming back from the dead. What?
Hardly any dieing despite all the combat. What? Have you never watched/seen Anime/Japanese film?
Most of the party relegated to cameos Red, Barret etc. Fair point, but the story was about Cloud, not the others. I would, however, liked to have seen them in bigger roles.
Fight scene after fight scene with little traditional story telling (aka matrix reloaded) I don't think there was much need for 'traditional story telling' but I see your point.
Confusing Septhroth appearance that seemed to go against what was established in the game (being a long time that I've played the game so may be wrong on this one). It was quite plausible - at the end of the game, we have Cloud 'Omnislashing' Sephiroth - who then dispersed away. I don't know if that's the official tie-in, but it seems to make some sort of sense. As it does if you don't use that link.
I somewhat agree, as I think the rpg genre has stayed the same for a long time -- too long -- but that's changing right now. FF12 brought freedom of movement during combat, Lost Odyssey brought a mature emotional depth that I haven't seen done in any genre, much less rpg's, for years, .hack//GU had the MMORPG spin where you read and post on faux forums etc. It's evolving, slowly.
FPS's evolve no faster than RPG's. Look at UT3, Crysis, Quake 4, The Darkness. These are BIG games. But they're still dyed in the wool pew-pews with one or two interesting features, just like RPG's. Solid games at their core, but nothing groundbreaking. The only ones I would count as being exeptional are Orange Box, Battlefield and CoD4.. and for every one of those there's an equally innovative or compelling RPG.
Your complaint is one for the industry as a whole, not one specific genre.
