Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn

I have a week at working home, the temptation to purchase is great.

I'm guessing its still a mare to get logged in?

Edit: only 5k a server  must be pretty **** weak servers.

Still a bit of a pain but easier than it was at the weekend.

5k concurrent users on a server is about normal for an MMO.

everyone said the same thing during early beta's in fact there was a huge thread on the ffxi forums about it with a mod or someone agreeing with us but it doesn't seem to have been something they give a crap about.

it's the most confusing map system I have ever seen in an mmo

Really? I actually quite like being able to have it up all the time to see where I need to be. It's not perfect, but I'm sure some bright spark will come along and create an addon for it at some point.

So whats this about quests then? If I complete all quests on one char I can't do them on an alt, that right??

Made a little 'tanky' looking dude last night but had to roll on JP server, seems to be a lot of english speaking folks there (Hades) but I would prefer to be on a English based server so I'm kinda stuck at the moment. Depending on the quest conundrum above it looks as if I will be holding fire waiting for them to add more servers or increase server pops as I couldnt create on any servers outside the JP ones (kept trying between 5pm and 10pm.

Only level 4 but feels very very Final Fantasy (jarring not hearing any voices at all though)

On any one character, you can level up all classes individually. So, your tank could be a mage at the switch of a weapon... but when you switch, he goes back to level one. Class progression is individual, but you can do it all on one character.

So when you start your mage from level 1 (though your tank is level 30), all the quests you hoovered up first time around on that character are already gone.

It's easy enough to level up without quests. After my Conjurer hit 30 I changed to the Arcanist so I could work towards the White Mage Soul Crystal, and after minutes I was already level 7 (much faster than it was the first time around when I was running back and forth doing quests). Together with Hunting Logs and the FATEs littered around those areas, I can't see the lack of quests being a problem.

Gotcha, I'm assuming they have gone down one starting area for all? If so I might wait for them to increase/add new servers :/

Different classes start off in different areas, like Lancers, Conjurers, and Archers start off in Gridania, Marauders and Arcanists in Limsa Lominsa, while Pugilists, Gladiators, and Thaumaturges start off in Ul'dah (so obviously if you started off in Gridania but want to level a class that starts off in Limsa Lominsa, you can basically do those areas from scratch with the exception of the main story quests).

That only applies to a point, after level 15-20 you end up in all the same areas no matter what class you play.

Not really, from the level 28 dungeon onwards they only pop roughly once an hour and that's playing as a White Mage healer. I don't know if they are broken or people just aren't queuing after that one. At that point you can forget dungeons for leveling as they just don't pop reliably enough and when they do i'm usually in the middle of leve quests or off for a pee :p
