CBA reading this thread, but a a Merc SL would be a good bet. Maybe an M3 CSL.
If it was me, I'd get a 330D for around £9-10Kish.
the only car I can think of for around that budget which wont cost mega money to run is a 911 (993)

Depreciation will be tiny and the fact that he is looking at E92 BMW's and the associated costs that go with them with regards to servicing makes it a semi-option.

Not even an early one?

Im in a reasonable position to comment as I work for BMW and I am looking at buying a 996 in the next couple of months.
we will agree to disagree.

That’s not to say it was a cheap car to run. In our 9000 miles with PHEC it was treated to two services, the first of which cost £906.43 at Porsche Centre Silverstone, the most recent, at renowned specialist Autofarm, coming in at £1059.56.

£2000 in one year for services. A BMW 330d would have needed what, an Inspection 1? At a whole £300?
If you are looking at running a 993 as a student you've got a heck of a shock coming!
