Fire Thread! - Stoves, Wood, Axes, Chainsaws

Yeah, utter nonsense.
Freshly felled wood for sale - great for decorating your log store/shed during the summer.
Jobs a good 'un :)
 
I chopped up a load of Oak (I think) for the wood oven, sometimes if I am short on seasoned wood once the oven is at about 170c usually after 36 hours give or take I load it up with wood and 'kiln dry' my own. Works pretty well.

Talking to the delivery drive when he delivered my order of building timber and wood from where he works is now £320 for 2.6 cubic meters - this is mixed dried hard wood.
It was £270 a couple of years ago.

Just round the corner from me is a log specialist and a bag is now £105 - dried and mixed hard wood.

I would be better off turning up the oil boiler but it not the same as sitting in front of a log burner.

It was inevitable given the popularity of log burners, it seems every other house has them these days. Not long ago tree surgeons gave logs away for free!

We wanted a log burner for years but previous house wasn't suitable and our new one had an empty unfinished fireplace with no gas supply. So it was begging for one to be fitted!
I've been able to get pretty much all our wood for free so far (bar £15 for a full seats-down car load) so am good for another winter or two I think. More people charging now though, making it less worthwhile when you take into account the time and effort loading, unloading and splitting.

Enjoy it while it lasts the environmentalists are definitely coming for the log burner!
 
Apparently log burners are kicking out more small particulates than all the cars in the UK now despite only a small % of households using one. People do burn wet wood, I've certainly smelt it. Dry wood burns almost smoke free once the fire is up to temperature.

Did you build your own wood fired oven?
 
Had a quote from a local installer. Total £2639.00 Stove and cooking plate is £900 then costs are Thats with opening up and lowering the hearth new slate hearth installed. Hopefully the original brick can be used and no new chamber fitted the no mantel as I think the original arch is under the plaster board. Also a 30 year guarentee flue. They are opening up a few weeks before install to check. A mantel and chamber will push the cost up by about £500.
 
Bought some fuel as the supplier charges less in the summer months.
Got a barrow bag of hardwood for £30, and glad to see that I can still buy bags of house coal, so picked up 60kg to fill the coal bin (a galvanised waste bin) for £20.
Should last until Christmas when it starts getting cold.
Log store was made from left over fence panels, posts and some 50*50, the bag has filled up this and about 2 nets worth next to the fire.

Decided to buy more logs now and store them as next year they will be even more expensive.

These I bought a month or so ago - Kiln dries and cut to 8" and that is a 2 cubic meter load. - Got these stacked and then re-activated two old log stores for some more.

Had another load last Friday of part seasoned logs for way less than the dried stuff and also 3 cubic meters.
I asked for 8" again but probably only 5% was that size - I had to split all those logs just to get them on my 4.5kw stove.
That log splitter has paid for itself 10 times over and they all went into the two log stores with no room left.
That is the ninth barrow full out of that pile. Also my 70 yr old willing helper.
