Fire Thread! - Stoves, Wood, Axes, Chainsaws

I need one of the 'sawhorse' log stand type things for chopping on with my saw... But it also needs to fold up well enough to go into a fiesta, so needs to be fairly modular and break down pretty short to fit in when I've got a boot full of logs. Any recommendations?

Also anyone fiddled with stove fans... And I mean the 'overclockers' amungst us! ;)

Guy on Faceache 'Log Burner Chat' group is developing a fan 'Synio' which looks not much more than a big copper heatsink, with a cowling, over a peltier (which I've found on Amazon for £7) which shifts a massive amount more CFM.

Sounds like the sell price is going to be 100-150 for them so well out of my price bracket. I just wonder how hard it is to knock something together myself. I've got a basic 'Vonhaus' 3 blade stove fan but it really doesn't shift much air. My stove doesn't get crazy hot (200-250 degrees) most of the time (unless I whack a bunch of pallet splits on it maybe up to 300) but it has a lot of heat around it, I just need a way of shifting more of that heat into the room as it's a narrow chimney and the stove really sits back on the hearth so there's a lot of heat lost/wasted just sat in the space and going up through the flu plate out the chimney.

Thinking of getting one of these.

Supposedly makes chopping logs up a lot easier and safer.
Anyone got one ?

The sawhorses I have would be no good for you as they are about 5 foot long when folded flat.

Very interesting and a lot of work has gone in to it. I already have two stove fans and I doubt I'll replace them unless they break of course!

I use one of these

Really handy and folds completely flat.

Yeah, I wouldn't be burning the flooring if you can avoid it, just like Satan should avoid curries. The glue in the floorboards is really bad and can coat your flue in all manner of crap, is impossible to get rid of and can catch fire - a flue fire is a very bad thing!

Doing well to burn it. A lot of that stuff has fire retardant in and is almost impossible to burn! I chucked a load of offcuts on the bonfire from when we had the extension done and they wouldnt burn at all. Thatr was caberdek though.

Well I eventually got over to 'the farm' to check the damage from storms before xmas... Loads of conifers down I'll get back to this summer... So spent 7 hours on a fallen Ash instead. Half of it dead already so perfect seasoned and lots more fresh which cut really well. My dad actually commenting it's the 'last big ash' that wasn't showing signs of dieback so was a shame to see it brought down by a storm. Bit of a picture dump...

Hydraulic splitter on the tractor amazing... But takes so much of the fun away! :)

Did probably 10 loads on the back of the quad. Around 0.8 of one of them in my fiesta so need to get back there and carry on another few days, then probably rent a van for the day and do 2-3 trips to get enough home (48 mile round trip!)

Thinking of getting one of these.

I bought a cheap knockoff... Think it was £22 from some random thing on *******. Arrived half the size I expected, not welded that well as by the time I'd split maybe 30 logs it fell apart, company non responsive to emails/contact.

They work very well especially the 'real' one like that! Really if I could find one for £40-50 I'd be happy, until then I'll carry on with my x17 on a block! :)

I got one of these a couple of years back and works great with an existing folding bench.

Compact too.

Nice and neat idea but I'm after something bigger, more the sort of thing to setup in field so less bending, but with the ease of just lifting a log on, not clamping and trying to keep the B&D 'Workmate' I have (exactly like the picture) stable. There's no way I'd wanna be trying to balance that on soft & uneven ground to then need to clamp a log. Too much time and hassle!

Very interesting and a lot of work has gone in to it. I already have two stove fans and I doubt I'll replace them unless they break of course!
It seems like a lot of work, but really the parts involved looked straight forward so could be fun to put something together... A copper HS, with a Peltier on some metal stand. Just the fan side of it would need to research to figure out one which works at various voltages...

They're good but crazy money for what they are!

Found this one and they seem to stock them various places locally for similar price so going to see one 'in the flesh' to check how easy they are to disassemble. They seem to come flatpacked/need assembly anyway so figure they will fit the car...

I dump all my ash on the garden (wood and some coal), mainly the veg patch which is used every year - apart from this I dont add anything else to the soil and use the same patch each year - it has produced great veg each year I have been doing it.
Do you test your soil, too alkaline isn't great for everything. Keep your soil around 6.5ph.

No, I dont test, I have the kit to do it but never found the need, as have been doing it for 5+ years and each year get a really healthy harvest.
