I am looking to get my first VR headset I have no idea what one to go for. I have been wanting to try VR for years, but with all the numerous companies it's hard to know what one to get therefore can someone assist me in picking the best one.

What are the specs of your computer?
Asus ROG Maximus XI Extreme Intel Z390
Intel Core i9-9900K
Patriot Viper Steel 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 PC4-35200C19 4400MHz Dual Channel Kit
ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2080 Super OC Edition
Am sure this is all you need can post more if needed

It's a pity the options are so limiting at the moment. Realistically your looking at oculus living in the now, if you can source one.

if it's not a now thing, then personally id wait to see what HP's new collaboration with Valve and MS throws up. Between all three of them I'm sure it'll be something mass market, cheap, with high end functionality and accessibility. I'm seeing a path in my head to releasing such a device right now while there's a driven interest from people such as yourself.

Yes, probably an Oculus rift s or the quest for that price and then lots to spend on games.

Every headset has compromises at the moment, even the index, read up on them and decide what you want most from it, or wait and see the the new hp headset brings to the table

Thanks, that systems will be perfect for VR.

If Your max budget is £700 there are really only two options worth considering, the Oculus Quest or the Oculus Rift S.

Both are great headsets and both will be an amazing experience for someone who hasn't tried VR before. I don't think you can wrong no matter which one you pick.

Thanks Been looking at the rift S I just wish there was a place I could go to test all these out before I buy

Hehe, right now you might be struggling with that:) though I believe at one time OCUK did VR demonstrations at the HQ. I wouldn't mind looking at the Cosmos myself.

My door is always open to locals wishing to try an Index, but naturally not at the minute.

Definitely the Oculus Rift S if the Valve Index is too expensive.

The Quest has a better screen but the link cable software is in beta. I wouldn't buy a product that's still in beta and potentially has bugs.

A compatible cable can cost you about £6 from Amazon. Hardly a risk.

If you bought the Quest mainy for basic standalone games that run on the Quest's built in hardware then yes, £6 is a low risk cost for the added bonus of playing the odd tripple A game for a change.

However, if you're buying a Quest for cable games only, the risk is £398.99 for the headset + £6 for the cable. I'd NEVER use it for standalone games personally so if I had issues with the tether system, I'd be stuck with a headset I couldn't use. I guess if you're into games like Beat Saber then the Quest is great.

What about the HP Reverb ? I understand it has higher resolution than the Rift S but quite a bit cheaper than the Index - worth considering ? Is there something about it I've missed ?

Both the reverb and the odyssey plus are windows mixed reality, so while they both give great picture quality, they both use the wmr controllers and tracking, while ok they are worse than the rest.

New to this but it seems silly to me that the rift s, which is meant to be the pc version of the hardware, has the lower screen res and doesn't have the IPD adjustment, yet is the same price as the quest which also has the in built processing power for the display.

Seems like a gap in the market for a better £400 unit to me.

The Rift S is, arguably, a better headset for PC only use. It's more comfortable for a starters, has better tracking because of the extra camera. The resolution doesn't tell the whole story. The screens on the Rift S have an extra sub pixel which reduces SDE a lot. They are also low persistence, which reduces the amount of motion blur. The OLED screens on the Quest have better blacks but the Rift S has a clearer, sharper display.

The Rift S has a higher refresh rate too, 80hz instead of 72Hz.
