Fishing - Anybody doing any ?

Decided to try get back into fishing. Use to love fishing for carp on the pole

I have already ordered a load of stuff but just wondering if there is anything big i am missing.

Seat Box with drawers
Margin Pole
Pole roller
Landing pole and net
Carp landing net and handle
Brolly
Bank sticks
Bait boxes
Elastics
Lead shots
Bait needles, hair stops, forceps, disgorgers, bands
Pole rigs
Plummets
Unhooking mat

Will go fetch a fishing licence once it all arrives.

Ignoring baits as ill buy them on the day, is there anything crucial i am missing to get back started in pole fishing? should have really asked before clicking the order button.

Thanks

Floats?

I'm not a fresh water fisherman but it seems floats are a staple to add options if things aren't biting..

Not a pole fisherman myself so not sure if you use one, but what about a catapult?

Weighing scales?

Also (worth mentioning just in case) not sure how long you've been away from fishing but there has been a shift from barbed to barbless hooks on many a venue.

be worth checking the venue rules as some places allow smaller barbed hooks,
this is from the rule book for Farnham Angling...

Hooks used must be single only. Size 16’s and smaller(16, 18, 20’s Etc) may be barbed. Size 14’s and larger(14, 12, 10’s Etc) must be barbless. Pike anglers may use trebles with one bait holding barb. Plugs and Spinners must have all barbs on all hooks crushed so they become barbless (See Bye-law: s.). Trout anglers may use single, barbed flies.

iirc the previous owners of the lakes by me (which are now run by Farnham Angling) were considering going back to barbed hooks as the Carp there were sustaining quite a lot of mouth damage due to barbless hooks slipping and re-hooking the fish in another part of its mouth

Ah, so some places are starting to come back to barbed from barbless.

This means I might actually get a use for the 100+ packets of barbed hooks I have been holding onto for 20 years!

Definitely worth checking the venue rules first.

I started freshwater fishing not long after they changed the rules on lead, so thankfully it's just the barbed hooks that I have a stock pile of.

About 12 years. Never fished with barbed hooks anyway.

I have just been to a few ponds that i use to fish. Thought i would go watch some people fishing and try take some things onboard.

My fave pond, Press manor:

Cannot wait to get back on here, hopefully next weekend. Just hoping i get back into the swing of things quickly, knock off the rust.

Looks spot on that, cheap enough and plenty of shelter from the wind with the trees.

My local club lake used to have good shelter from the wind but for the last couple of years they've chopped a lot of the trees down, not sure the reasons why. It can get pretty windy even when it seems not too bad everywhere else.

looks nice, you see any Carp mooching around on the surface?
thats my fav way to catch them, a simple controller float setup and i glugg some 8mm brown pop up boillies in salmon oil for hook bait, then get busy with me catapult and a bag of pedigree chum mixer :D

looks a nice little pond. try close in with meat and corn if smaller carp.the big tree in the corner under neath that any bull rushes. look for boiling in the margins just before setting up on the pegs if not many there.

early mornings always good for carp tench 4 am to about 10am then afternoon just before sunsets is often a great time.

I picked up all my kit on Monday and went for my first fish today as a nearby pond and I actually caught some fish!

I caught 10 roach of various size in about 3 hours of fishing which I was very happy with although I'd have liked to have caught another species for variation.

Im going to get a 10ft rod I think as I was struggling with how big the 13ft was when trying to bait it and bring fish in.

Sounds like you had a good few hours Roach fishing. Do you know what other species of fish are in the pond?

Describe what you did to catch the Roach.

You say you were struggling to bait and also bring fish in. Could you give a little more info as to what was happening, why you were struggling?

The size of the rod shouldn't matter when baiting the hook or landing fish (unless you were fishing a tight swim with over-hanging trees or something), so I suspect you were doing something not quite right there. Were you swinging the Roach to hand or were you using a landing net?

I saw some carp and the site just says carp and a selection of coarse fish.

I used the little and often method of feeding with my catapult and maggots out to about 15ft which put me just in front of some lily pads.

The whole manoeuvring of the rod was awkward putting bait on whilst trying to hold it up or make any adjustments if i had to put it down as it's so long but this could also just come from inexperience.

I have picked up a 10ft one now and its so much lighter and more advanced than the 20 year old one I had been using. When landing for the small ones I just swung them to hand and the larger I used the net to try not to hurt them.

The first thing I would say would be to find out exactly what species of fish are in the pond. Once you know that, you can specifically try and target them.

Take a change of bait with you next time and see what difference that makes. Along with your maggots, take worm and sweetcorn, maybe even luncheon meat (if permitted).

The guy at the fish shop said the same thing so I'll definitely try that when I go tomorrow.
Thanks

Hehe went down to Appollo fisheries for a few bits (80lb shock leader, hooks etc).. they had a lovely little 8-20g dropshot rod.. £50.. but unfortunately the mrs came with me.
