Back off topic :p

Hi Miniyazz - Haven't seen Comodo reviewed that much & didn't know there was an AV forum here:o Can't remember the link to a site that does comparative tests but it pops up on google.
Had watched these reviews
http://www.youtube.com/user/languy99#p/u/3/Bj_Tg8EeY-s
That's for Comodo which I just seen. So it would appear my info is out of date:o There are 3 videos comparing Comodo to Norton.
Had not been aware of www.virustotal.com before
Agree that Norton can be **** to remove had the same problem with Bitdefender.
I'm not saying MSE is the best just for freeware & easy to use it is better than some out there.
My Nod32 expires in Jan so might give this new comodo a try myself [as well as check out the AB forum, ta for the pointer]:)

Let us know how you get on.

I just sold my speakers so can't watch the video :o d'oh!

Certainly I don't think Comodo used to be all that but apparently has improved with the latest version.

The AV thread is pretty long but contains some good knowledge. Might be worth starting halfway through now though if you're planning on reading it as it'll be a bit out-of-date now nearer the start!

I'll try to remember to post back with how it goes, but I might be taking a bit of a break from OcUK in a week or so (will still keep folding :D). Too much work to do, I figure if I can take away everything I do in my spare time I'll have no choice but to work  :(

I'm likeing Microsoft Security Essentials.
I've used paid versions of Nod32 and Kaspersky but Nod32 seems to have slipped of late and Kaspersky customer support is a total joke.

Trouble with AVs is you never know how effective they are unless you have a problem! Or unless you switch and the new one picks up things the old one had clearly missed

IMO it's all about the primary AV with real-time protection and nightly/weekly scans and then running malwarebytes or some other such 'backup' detection software on a weekly basis. :)

I used to use Avast before Kaspersky but I've been with Kaspersky for 4 years now so that's in the long-distant past. I'd still recommend it but based on me never having any problems years ago rather than how it actually performs these days, I don't know how it compares to others!

I only used Kaspersky support once and it didn't exactly blow me away but did sort of mostly answer my query within a week, which did me :) Not that great I guess in the scheme of things.

I use F-Prot on my business stuff and Avast on the personal, but I also have 2 level border AV on my firewall which does email and web as well.

MSE with ad aware here and malwarebytes scans every now and then for good measure.

I don't use anything on my windows home server folding rig though, should I be? I mean if no one is browsing the internet on it, and no executables are run on it, is there any risk?

It depends, how did you get the F@H software on to it? Directly or via another pc on your network? What happens if another PC gets infected in your network and has an unprotected PC at its mercy?
Are you 100% sure it's protected by your firewall and there aren't any ports open and visible?

I'd not take the risk given the number of free packages around that are very lightweight. this is why I use MSE on my folder rigs.

To some extent AV is like a parachute: you only know how good it is when you need it. I believe most threats are now malware, trojans & rootkits, so good anti-spyware/malware is almost more important than AV.
I use Open DNS & that will block some dodgy sites as will Nod32. Fortunately the only phishing emails I've had are for AOL or US Banks.

With the recent news about Google collecting data via unsecured wifi networks it amazes me how many poeple out there are ignorant of how to protect themselves!

I think a good firewall is v. important although I'm relying on the Windows one at present. As long as the firewall doesn't interfere with BOINC or Fah:)

I didn't think of that, and some ports are open for some of the WHS remote functions. I'll install it when I get home :o

Thanks

Anyway enough of this off topic Antivirus malarky.

Nice Biffa, do you have a target in your head for what next big tiffy you're aiming for?

My goal has been 10mil for a while now, getting there slowly.

I've been getting screwed over all week with crappy P10632 units, dropped my PPD down 10K

Well with Seti out for a month I shall carry on with the foldings along with smp goodness :) 27k shall be yours for about a month

Some stomps to go with it will more than likely be quicker due to smp now working hope my cpu can take it only @ 3Ghz now :( :D

Ah crap. My GPU still throws a wobbler on certain WUs and does the while EUE thing. I hoped that had passed since the issues I had in April/May. 4 days of plain sailing and bump! :(

I have a copy of Server 2008 R2 here. Hmm... is several hours of arsing about worth it for a few extra PPD? :p
