680 mobo might not be the best thing in the world. From my reading it is incredibly unstable and the consensus seems to be that nVidia shouldn't have released it at all.

\o/ an AM2 fileserver. If I didn't know you wanted the dual core to fold on, I'd be seriously considering your mental state.Joe42 said:I'm also quite fancying the idea of building an x2 3800+ based fileserver... i would need an am2 board, which must not be asus, must have decent enough clocking options to utilise the full potential of an x2 3800+ and it should have some decent fan controller options... can anyone recommend anything?
Good pointA.N.Other said:\o/ an AM2 fileserver. If I didn't know you wanted the dual core to fold on, I'd be seriously considering your mental state.
Sure can. Get those rigs folding ASAP.lay-z-boy said:can you say holy freakin' smp output batman?
Awesome! So do you build machines or what?lay-z-boy said:I have just received an order from a client requesting not one but 2 top end quad core machines, they wont be picking the machines up for around 1-3 weeks after i finish them!

C'mon, they're only 60 quid.A.N.Other said:\o/ an AM2 fileserver. If I didn't know you wanted the dual core to fold on, I'd be seriously considering your mental state.
I like the look of their uguru stuff, ten times better than asus q-fan.shadowscotland said:using a AW9D-max at present - really like it, but not the best clocker for allendales (but i got it for a future conroe upgrade)
With the amd bracket its a dream to fit. Just hook two clps in the bracket and push the heatsink down till the other two click in. Easiest heatsink i've ever fitted, better even than the stock coolers. It still hold its own against the top heatsinks of today performance wise too, beats the thermaltake big typhoon and its not far off the ninja/ultra 120 either. Also use a xp-120 and really like it - bit fiddley to fit via the 775 bracket but keeps temps and noise down nicely
Yeah, but my point was that a fileserver will never even use 5% of the CPU power of that. You can run a firewall / router linux system on an ancient P1 without getting above about 10% usage.Joe42 said:C'mon, they're only 60 quid.
I could get an athlon xp bundle or something off the bay for that, but it'll be old and slow, i can do an am2 dual core bundle for £200ish, that's a months wages.
The only problem is the power consumption.
Well, as it happens its currently on a celeron 800 and its cpu limited, the harddisks never get to 100% utilisation because the system they're connected to is too slow.A.N.Other said:Yeah, but my point was that a fileserver will never even use 5% of the CPU power of that. Still, I'd do the same, so I can't reallt blame you

Get off me
Well i think its fair to say its my celeron 800 thats the bottle neck, that or the 128mb of ramlay-z-boy said:On the file server front a good quality nic and cpu work wonders for them, i had a p4c 3.2 as my file server up utill the other day, i moved it over to my 930d and the speed increase for file transfer was phenomenal, so was its ability to multitask. (both had gigabit connections not on the pci bus and same hdd's)

2*css servers
