Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 6th July 2006

Garp did get it to match at one point but it vastly increased the size of something along the way - something to do with 8k and 24k thingymagigs :p

this is why I don't do sigs :p

though I could sort the problem in the news post by not including my sig in them - that thought has crossed my mind a few times

edit: I won't be changing my siggy though - I like being a bit different :D

I'm hunting for a p3 based fileserver on the bay and i'm wondering how it will fold. Apparently according to this post a slightly overclocked p3 Tualatin is faster than a p4 2.0. Is this correct?

I can get dual p3 733 (not tualatin obviously) with 512mb of ram for £70.
Getting tualatins would probably cost a bit more, but if they fold better i'm all for it...

If you go for a tualatin core machine it'll be clocked higher and will be cooler but I wouldn't bother. FAH performance scales nicely with clockspeed. If you're getting the machine anyway, abolutely put FAH on it. If you're interested in doing it just to run FAH it's be cheaper in the long run to save a bit and get an Athlon MP or similar.

Not a bad week for Bigstan.

Managed 5th in the top dumpers despite having a rig in the slugfest. One core is already back onto the main account since it finished it's last WU, the other will be transferred back when it's current WU completes at about 01:00 (Iknow it won't count for the slugfest but it's well past halfway so it may as well finish).

I have also added another X2 3800+ which is running at 2.50 (it would probably go a lot higher on a better mobo but it was a budget machine and the only alternative is to switch it with the headless SD 4000+ which involves lots of hassle and I can't be arsed at the moment :o

Welshwhiskysucks has had a good week too, got a mention in nearly all of the sections. I toyed with the idea of keeping it as a single and entering it in the single rig league but decided to keep it in the main account for now.

Thanks as always to Rich for the news and a warm foldy type welcome to all the new peeps :)

Fold on team 10

Athlon MPs are scarce as Hens teeth... that would have been my preferred option.
So its not worth spending, say an extra £50 or something to get 1.2 tualatins over 733s?

Its a fileserver primarily, but it will probably fold more than it serves files so i'm looking for a machine that will fold nicely too.

Thanks for the news as always Mr 99million Sah

I can get back to those luvvly beta wus, and regain my top spot in the single crunchers league (hopefully) :)

I'm still a Multicore/MultiCPU there rich :p ;)
I knew I'd missed at least one change to the list - couldn't work out what it was

there's probably more in there somewhere, maybe in the Tiffy's section :o just yell if you spot anything - gonna move the news back a bit earlier from next week as I finish work at 2PM these days and by 8:30 ish my urge to write news is a bit gone :p

Don't be too forlorn, Stan. Crappy WUs need tested too. ;)

It depends heavily on what's out there. Recently there's been a lot of DGromacs work out there. DGromacs are benchmarked and scored with SSE2 disabled. that means that it's using 64-bit floats instead of 128-bit floats. That means that sometimes you could be doubling the benchmark PPD before even adding other factors like a faster CPU than the benchmark machine.

Yeah, I'd say that it'd be worth the extra 50 quid for 1.2s.
If you (or anyone else for that matter) were given a loose budget of around £100 for a folding box off the bay what would you get?

Probably best to email me with suggestions to avoid breaking the competitor rule, so email in trust if need be. ;)

Wow second place in the single crunchers league :D:D

I might have been first if that damn WU of mine had been using the optimizations - seemed it fancied doing it the ole fashioned way... 1+1+1+1+1... and so on :p

I think someone asked what rig we were running, so for their benefit I am running a 4400+ at 2.6GHz with 2GB of OCZ RAM. The computer is also on 24/7. In fact the only time this baby aint crunching is when I am gaming, and even then only one core stops :D

Thanks for the news Rich, you might as well move shadowscotland off the single cruncher list too. (it's crunching it's last WU) all output from now on lemonman's account.

Jo42 - and yes my 1.26 tualatin does fold better than the office P4 2.0.
It's got more and faster ram, and that nice extra L2 Cache :D
seen reviews of them being clocked on my MoBo to 1.8+ on water (but I don't do water and electrics ;) )

check the spair parts sticky for swaps on an old P3 server
